Mel Gibson reportedly shoved, spat and hurled abuse at an Australian photographer over the weekend after she tried to get pictures of the 59-year-old actor with his much younger girlfriend Rosalind Ross, 24, leaving an Australian Israeli Film Festival.

Daily Telegraph snapper Kristi Miller claims the Braveheart star pushed her in the back and called her a 'dog' and a 'c**t', among other things.

Police are investigating the incident which she says left her terrified and fearing Gibson was going to punch her in the face after a barrage of profanity.

Gibson's rep told Daily Mail Australia the Oscar-winner did 'not shove, or spit at anyone', adding the allegation 'is a complete lie.'

The incident is said to have taken place on Sunday at 6.40pm outside Palace Verona Cinema in Oxford St, Paddington, Sydney, and reportedly only came to a halt when Gibson's new girlfriend stepped in and told her older beau 'that is enough' before apologising profusely.

'I thought he was going to punch me in the face,' the photographer and mother-of three says.

'He was spitting in my face as he was yelling at me, calling me a dog, saying I'm not even a human being, and I will go to hell. He swore and called me a 'c**t. It was non stop, he didn't even breathe.'

The photographer also claimed it was only when the champion equestrian grabbed the star's shoulder and attempted to drag him away that he backed off.

Defending Gibson she is alleged to have told the stunned photographer, according to The Australian: 'Sorry, he's a bit sick at the moment.'

The actor's rep, Alan Nierob, told Daily Mail Australia on Monday: 'The photographer was harassing Mr Gibson and his friend and they asked her to stop.

'No one shoved or spat at anyone. It's a complete lie. There was no physical altercation whatsoever.

'She [the photographer] was harassing them and was asked to stop. He did tell her to get a real job though.'

NSW police are investigating the alleged incident with a spokeswoman telling news.com.au officers were looking into reports 'a man became involved with an altercation with a photographer outside a cinema on Oxford St.'

The greying star is in Sydney with his girlfriend, also a budding film writer, who joined him last week to collaborate on his upcoming flick, Hacksaw Ridge.

He had spent the first week of his stay entertaining his five-year-old daughter Lucia from his relationship with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

Since his daughter's departure, Ross is keeping the actor entertained.

The couple reportedly met after the sportswoman applied for a role as a writer at his production company Icon earlier this year.

Ironically, Gibson, who turns 60 next month and is known for his anti-Semitic outbursts, was seen leaving the Australian Israeli Film Festival screening of Matti Caspi - Confession.

Gibson's violent rages have been widely reported in the past.

In 2006 he was embroiled in furious controversy amid claims he launched an anti-Semitic rant after being arrested for drink-driving.

The Oscar-winner, who is from an ultra-conservative Catholic family, is alleged to have told sheriff's deputy James Mee: "F****** Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.'

It was claimed Gibson then asked: 'Are you a Jew?'

On the same stretch of road in Malibu where he was arrested in 2006, he was stopped while driving without his licence in 2013.

He reportedly flew into a rage when LA police officers asked for his driving documents.

TMZ.com reported him as ranting at the time: 'Why are you harassing me?...I have had problems with you Lost Hills [Malibu] deputies in the past.'

His ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva has told how she feared he would kill her in a vicious assault.

Miss Grigorieva said he often flew into jealous rages and talked about suicide.

On another occasion she claims he threw her son onto a table, but the film director has denied the allegations.

The pair went through a protracted and bitter custody battle after separating in 2011.

Gibson pleaded no-contest to a charge of battery against Grigorieva in March, 2011, and has since completed the community service portion of his charge.

During this time, he underwent a year-long course in anger management and domestic violence counselling.

A number of recordings made by Grigorieva were leaked online, allegedly showing Mel using violent, racist and abusive language towards her.

He tried to play them down, saying: 'You have to put it all in the proper context of being in an irrationally, heated discussion at the height of a breakdown, trying to get out of a really unhealthy relationship.

'It’s one terribly, awful moment in time, said to one person, in the span of one day and doesn’t represent what I truly believe or how I’ve treated people my entire life.'
