Also in the sale is a vintage photo of Monroe wearing the hat taken by Roy Schatt, a photographer to the stars in the 1950s.

The hat is tipped to fetch $35,000 - around £22,000 - when it goes under the hammer at Nate D. Sanders auctioneers.

Sam Heller, a spokesman for the auction house, said: 'This hat originally belonged to Marilyn Monroe and was part of a sale of her possessions in 1999.

'Although items owned and worn by Monroe are rare, the value for her items is high primarily because collectors covet anything she has worn.
