Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has spent £20,000 on a waxwork of himself to take pride of place in his Spanish mansion.

The Real Madrid player paid for the sculpture after making numerous visits to see a similar statue of himself  in the Spanish capital's Museum of Wax.

Ronaldo, who used to play for Manchester United, hired British waxwork sculptor Michael Wade to make the replica at his renowned studio in Bridport, Devon.

The 30-year-old Portugal captain even got his personal hairdresser to ensure the wax figure has his trademark hairstyle.

Mr Wade, who also made the Ronaldo sculpture in the Museum of Wax, told the Sun on Sunday: 'We still had the mould that we'd used to sculpt him in 2013, so this copy was a complete duplicate. And Ronaldo sent us a football kit and his latest boots.

'But we left the hair alone, because that's exactly how he wanted it. We put all the hair in, one at a time and then, in Madrid, his hairdresser came along to cut it.'

The statue, wearing a full Portugal football kit, was flown from Heathrow to Madrid in a crate, with the head packed separately. 

The vain footballer finally saw the waxwork for the first time when it arrived at the museum.

It will now be sent on a tour of Europe before taking pride of place in Ronaldo's mansion, west of Madrid.

'Cristiano told us to be sure his figure was perfect,' Gonzalo Presa, the museum's communication director told Spanish newspaper Cadena Ser Catalunya.

'He sent his own hairstylist to brush his figure once a month. Cristiano's (the waxwork's) hair is natural. It is not a wig and it comes from India.'
