Voodoo child: African tribe 'raise' effigies of dead children as if they are alive - feeding, bathing and even sending them to school

African tribe who 'raise' voodoo dolls as if they are alive

The Fon tribe of Benin are believers in voodoo and 'raise' twin children who die in childhood as if they were alive. They believe their spirits occupy the wooden effigies and will bring the family good luck if they are well cared for - and an evil curse if they are not. The rule only applies to multiple births such as those of Mrs Ablossi, left, who lost two pairs of twins and a set of triplets. Most are cared for by their mothers such as Hounyoga, 40, the wife of a local voodoo priest, who gives the effigies of her twins Zinsou and Zinhoue weekly baths in the lake (inset) and takes them to the temple every day. She says the twins, a boy and a girl who were two when they died, ensure the wellbeing of her other children (pictured with her centre). The Fon tribe has one of the highest rates of twin births in the world but thanks to a combination of malaria and poverty (such as for the family, right), many don't survive to adulthood.
