Don't mix sleeping pills with booze, claim an empty row and never reserve the first few rows to avoid a crying child: The ultimate guide to surviving a long-haul flight
- Passenger should bring an inflatable pillow, book and warm socks
- Today's longest non-stop flights exceed 16 hours and can be agonising
- Emirates will soon have a 17 hour flight between Dubai and Panama City
The thought of spending half a day or more inside a cramped aeroplane can be enough to put a holidaymaker off travelling altogether.
With today’s longest flights now exceeding 16 hours, flying across a handful of time zones – let alone eight – is an exhausting and agonising experience.
But travellers can take a number of precautions to ease the pain – from taking an inflatable travel pillow and a paperback book to claiming an empty row and skipping the complimentary booze.

Long-haul flights can be an exhausting and and agonising experience for many holidaymakers
An infographic designed by travel website Hotel World offers a number of tips for passengers to remain comfortable and get some sleep.
The advice is centred around the world’s current longest flight – Qantas’ service between Sydney and Dallas – which covers 8,578 miles in just under 17 hours.
The infographic suggests passengers bring everything from an inflatable travel pillow, book, noise cancelling headphones, an eye mask and sleeping pills with them on the plane to help them fall asleep.
Sleeping pills should not be consumed with alcohol.
They should also avoid booking a seat in the first few rows of each seating section, as the first row tends to be reserved for travelling families.
Once on the plane, travellers should change into comfortable clothes, skip the booze and avoid eating foods that cause an upset stomach.
Those who struggle to sleep should consider a natural sleeping aid such as melatonin before opting for sleeping pills.
Passengers should also get up and stretch their legs, and stay hydrated throughout the flight.
Those who are travelling on a flight of 14 hours or more should take some time to freshen up before the plane lands, the infographic suggests.
In February, Emirates will begin offering the world’s longest non-stop flight, with a 17 hour and 35 minute service between Dubai and Panama City.
