A heroic off-duty police officer has tearfully described the shocking moment she saved a little girl's life after she was allegedly set on fire by her father. The accused Edward John Herbert, 43, will face Perth Magistrates Court for allegedly pouring a liquid and setting fire to his son and two daughter's inside their Doubleview home on Saturday night. The youngest child, a girl who turned four on Monday, remains at Princess Margaret Hospital in a critical but stable condition. She is reportedly in an induced coma with a number of surgeries scheduled.

A desperate mother has built a $3000 metal cage to keep her ice addict son from leaving home to feed his drug addiction in the Queensland city of Rockhampton. The woman said while he wasn't impressed with the idea and police have told her she could be charged if she puts the 17-year-old in it, she has run out of options. She defended spending the $3000, saying 'there's no first car or university for him, there is just keeping him alive'.

Sydney model Genevieve Barker, 26, was the victim of body shaming on Instagram with many claiming her slim figure made her look ill. A photo posted by a photographer of the model last week received a flood of harsh comments labelling her skinny and unhealthy. Barker is sick of people thinking it's okay to bully slim people for their figure and says the comments 'really, really hurt' and that she is healthy, fit and well nourished.

Griffith University behavioural ecologist Dr Darryl Jones says research has found that magpies can recognise individual people by their facial features to carry out targeted attacks. It is not clear why magpies target particular people, but Dr Jones says the birds can often live in the same territory for 20 years and would recognise residents in the immediate area easily. 'A really smart animal like a magpie knows faces - they look at eyes and faces,' Dr Jones told Daily Mail Australia.

Amy Chen, 16, died on Friday night after sneaking out of her dorm room to go 'drag racing', a note left at the crash scene in Kew, in Melbourne's north-east, revealed. The letter, written in Chinese by Ms Chen's 21-year-old roommate and left at a roadside memorial to the dead girl, expressed the young woman's heartache over losing her friend.

A Tasmanian war veteran who obtained a debilitating brain injury from a roadside bomb blast in Iraq has tragically passed away after 11 years of suffering. The partner of a world-renowned concert pianist has been arrested after she was found battered to death. Natalia Strelchenko (pictured right), 38, was discovered with head and neck injuries at their home early on Sunday. Her partner, John Martin (pictured together left), 48, who was also her manager, is being held on suspicion of murder. Martin, a Norwegian who plays the double bass, was being questioned by Manchester police last night. The couple have a son, Leo, 14, who lived at the house.
