Undercover diner! Scruffy Christian Bale takes his family out for sushi after signing up to play Ferrari founder

He's set to play the clean-shaven man behind the Ferrari luxury car brand.

But Christian Bale was looking more like a wild man than a sophisticated Italian with a taste for the finer things in life when he stepped out with his family in Brentwood, California, on Friday.

That said while the 41-year-old actor may not have looked that fancy he did take his wife Sibi Blazic and their son, Joseph, to upscale sushi spot Katsuya for dinner.

The scruffy star was barely recognisable under a heavy beard and long hair with a centre parting.

The Dark Knight beefcake looked far removed from his handsome clean-cut Bruce Wayne persona as he carried his 11-month-old son as they patiently waited with other diners in line for a table.

The American Hustle actor teamed camouflage board-length shorts with a plain light grey t-shirt.

He slipped on a pair of flip-flops, leaving his feet to air in the sizzling Californian temperatures.

His wife also dressed to beat the heat, wearing an all-white casual ensemble featured cuffed shirts and a sleeveless tank.

The couple - who are also proud parents to ten-year-old daughter Emmeline - have been married for 15 years and still look delighted to be in each other's company.

It was revealed earlier this month that after handling the Batmobile like a pro, he's preparing to get behind the wheel of a biopic about legendary car designer Enzo Ferrari, according to Deadline

The as-yet untitled film is being directed by Michael Mann after almost 15 years on his backburner and will chart the rise of the Ferrari as a luxury vehicle.

The project reunites the actor and director who last worked together on 2009's Public Enemies, where Bale played FBI agent Melvin Purvis on the trail of Johnny Depp's notorious bank robber John Dillinger.

The Oscar-winning heartthrob will be hoping to get back to winning ways at the box office after his last outing Exodus Gods And Kings misfired.
