And the worst dressed award goes to... Stars roll onto MTV VMA's red carpet in kitsch, garish and VERY revealing outfits

The MTV Video Music Awards is supposed to honour the industry's best and brightest.

But when it came to fashion the red carpet was also awash with some of the world's dimmest stars, who were desperately trying to snatch the limelight with outlandishly garish outfits.

The event is traditionally a place where stars push the envelope with outrageous ensembles and they certainly did not disappoint this time around.

Show off your stems in silver OTK boots by Versace

Miley Cyrus is the host of the MTV movie awards and she walked the red carpet as a silvery Barbella babe. She might not have left much to the imagination, but she did leave us gasping for those over the knee Versace boots.

Perhaps the only wearable part of her outfit for us mere mortals, the gold platform with iconic house of Versace detailing, combined with silvery suede makes this one serious statement shoe. We would pair it with a simple LBD to highlight the wow factor. Another styling option would be over skin tight black leggings and a loose off the shoulder gold blouse for a 70s feel.

Sadly the silver version are not available online. The more versatile black version is available at Farfetch for $3,175 so click to the right if you're ready to make such an investment. If you heart is set on some mercury madness, check out our edit below.

Glitter, neon and a lot of flesh ruled the night and raised plenty of eyebrows too.

Of course the show's host is Miley Cyrus, and as a worst-dressed list stalwart she made sure she pulled out all the stops on the red carpet.

This time the 22-year-old Wrecking Ball singer wore almost nothing at all, with silver braces covering her exposed breasts and a loincloth of stage jewellery somewhat preserving her modesty down below, though thankfully it appeared she was also wearing a flesh coloured undergarment too.

When it comes to awful outfits self-styled singer Z La La really took the cake with a bizarre golden gown which boasted sleeves that seemed to be made up of inflated inner tubes covered with fabric.

Space oddity: The show's host appeared to be maintaining the event's science fiction theme with this number

In need of a lick of paint: In fact a full force makeover would perhaps have been more desirable in this instance

Tongue twister: But after a while even Miley seemed to be getting bored of her red carpet raspberry blowing

To top off her sub-Doctor Who alien extra level look, her hair was styled into a point, much like a bargain basement chess pawn, and her face was adorned with baroque golden make-up around her eyes.

Meanwhile glamour model Amber Rose made a statement, of sorts, with a skin-tight jumpsuit covered in insulting words.

The extremely tight outfit was littered with a veritable thesaurus of nasty terms for women, with just some of the multicoloured lettering including the likes of 'golddigger' and stripper.

No doubt the canny self-publicist will explain she was making a feminist statement with her bold choice of clothing, even if her fashion statement misfired badly.

Former Fashion Police presenter Kelly Osbourne seemed in danger of being arrested after turning up in a dowdy double-breasted pinstriped number that was an unsightly combination of a trousersuit and a jumpsuit.

Thankfully equality was very much in force on the red carpet, with some of the men wearing outfits that left some of their badly dressed female counterparts in the shade.

Leading the charge was designer Jeremy Scott, displaying his usual level of panache after showing up in a patently ridiculous not-so-amazing technicolor dreamcoat.

He overshadowed the similarly awfully attired rockers Walk The Moon, who perhaps hoped to prove their art-rock credentials with Jackson Pollock inspired suits.

Sadly in this case they looked more like a delegation of painter and decorators.
