Kim Kardashian caves in to FDA pressure and reposts 'misleading' morning sickness drug ad WITH warnings about potential side effects (but was the timing deliberate?)

  • Kardashian, 34, who is pregnant, was paid to tweet about Diclegis in July
  • But she fell short of advertising stands by not including a health warning
  • Federal officials accused the star of breaking medicine advertising laws
  • They also threatened to take Diclegis off the market due to 'misbranding'
  • Now, Kardashian has reposted ad - but with warnings about side effects
  • Advert was posted on Sunday as VMAs were kicking off in Los Angeles
  • She may have hoped post would be overlooked in excitement of awards

She was slammed by government officials after posting a selfie on Twitter endorsing a prescription drug for morning sickness without mentioning the medication's array of potential side effects.

But now, Kim Kardashian has caved in to the authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by reposting her social media advert for Diclegis - with warnings about the drug's downsides.

In the new post - which was uploaded on Sunday night as the MTV VMAs were kicking off - the expectant mother wrote: 'I guess you saw the attention my last #morningsickness post received.'

She went on: 'The FDA has told Duchesnay, Inc., that my last post about Diclegis... was incomplete because it did not include any risk information or important limitations of use for Diclegis.

'A link to this information accompanied the post, but this didn’t meet FDA requirements. So, I’m re-posting and sharing this important information about Diclegis. For US Residents Only.'

Kardashian, 34, then detailed the drug's limitations of use, 'important safety information', potential side effects - including drowsiness - and the danger of breastfeeding while taking Diclegis.

She concluded the post with links to Duchesnay's Diclegis website and the FDA's MedWatch page.

It is unclear whether the reality TV star - who is around six months' pregnant with her and husband Kanye West's second child - deliberately chose to post the 'corrective ad' on the night of the VMAs.

Kardashian - who attended the Los Angeles-based awards ceremony in an eye-popping dress with a lace front - could have hoped her post would be overlooked in the excitement of the VMAs.

Alternatively, she may have assumed more people would be on her Twitter page on Sunday night.

Following Kardashian's original, 'misleading' post about Diclegis - which she was paid to upload - the FDA pulled the star's gushing reviews and smiling selfie from Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

The organization said Kardashian had fallen foul of federal law by failing to warn her millions of fans about the potential downsides of the pill. It said that her violations were 'serious and repeated'.

And it even threatened to take Diclegis off the market due to the July 'misbranding'.

Diclegis has not been tested on women with severe morning sickness - known medically as hyperemesis gradivarum - and its effects of women suffering from the condition are unknown.

Kardashian's original post, which was 'liked' online by hundreds of thousands of fans, began with 'OMG' and said she was 'so excited and happy with my results' after her sickness vanished.

Although in the post Kardashian said she was 'partnering with' manufacturer Duchesnay, she was not explicit about the fact that she was paid to make the post - which the firm later admitted.

She told her followers: 'Have you heard about this? As you guys know my #morningsickness has been pretty bad. I tried changing things about my lifestyle, like my diet, but nothing helped, so I talked to my doctor. He prescribed me #Diclegis, and I felt a lot better and most importantly, it’s been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby. I’m so excited and happy with my results that I’m partnering with Duchesnay USA to raise awareness about treating morning sickness.'

Kardashian's post ended with a reminder to talk to a doctor before taking the pill, and a link to another website with safety information displayed. But, according to a complaint letter from FDA officials, 'this does not mitigate the misleading omission of risk information'.

The agency demanded that the posts be deleted immediately, which later happened.

It said in the letter: 'Because the violations described above are serious and repeated, we request, further, that your submission include a comprehensive plan of action to disseminate truthful, non-misleading, and complete corrective messages about the issues discussed in this letter to the audience(s) that received the violative promotional materials.'

It added that the corrections should use the same media as the original posts - raising the prospect that Kardashian would have to publish an embarrassing mea culpa on social media.

And the expectant mother did just that on Sunday night.

Kardashian - who has been documenting her pregnancy on social media - attended the VMAs in Los Angeles on Sunday alongside West, who was dressed in one of his trademark over-sized sweaters.

He matched it with a pair of beige trainers and trousers, which he rolled up to the calf.

During his acceptance speech for his Video Vanguard Award (otherwise known as the Lifetime Achievement Award), West spectacularly announced he would be running for president in 2020.

After being introduced by Taylor Swift - who drew plenty of laughs when she mimicked lines from West's stage ambush six years ago - West admitted he had smoked a joint prior to the show.

He also spoke about his experience of fatherhood and the media's hypocrisy, before saying: 'As you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.'
