Statistics of the 1920s – 1930s

Statistical data in the 1920s and 1930 were collected by the State Statistical Bureau established on 1 September 1919, not long after the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Latvia. Demographic data after the long years of war and unrest with streams of refugees, were first published in 1921 in “The Statistical Yearbook of Latvia, 1920”. The majority of the time series of the first republic start in 1920 and end in 1938 with the last “Statistical Yearbook of Latvia” in 1939 when the World War II interrupted the activity of the State Statistical Bureau. Some of the indicators for 1939 and 1940 can be obtained from the German publication Ostland in Zahlen issued by the Reichskommissariat für das Ostland in 1942. As the prewar period serves as an important basis for statistical reports on the 1920s and 1930s, data for 1897, 1910, 1914 and other years before the establishment of the state of Latvia have been republished, where possible.
