Chelsea have the quality and character to challenge for Premier League title... we will improve, insists goalkeeper Asmir Begovic

Asmir Begovic has fired a sharp warning to Chelsea’s doubters, confidently stating they are united and backing Jose Mourinho.

The Premier League champions have meandered out the blocks this season, already surrendering an eight-point lead to Manchester City.

That has manifested alongside a backdrop of difficulties stemming from an agitated Mourinho, leaving some wondering whether the manager has lost his grip at Stamford Bridge.

Begovic rubbished those claims and says Chelsea are capable of successful defending their title.

‘Obviously from a results point of view it’s not where we want to be at the moment,’ the Bosnia goalkeeper told Sportsmail

‘We need to improve, we know that. But we definitely will - we’ve got the quality and character to really push on and challenge for the title.’

Mourinho drew stern criticism for his handling of medical staff Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn last month. Neither is back in the matchday fold after being publicly harangued by Mourinho, but player backing for the manager is unwavering.

‘Those things are difficult for us,’ Begovic added. ‘As players we respect him and we’re behind him. He’s behind us and we’re all very much together.

‘In our camp we don’t see these things as a big deal. We understand what the situation is. We’ll let other people talk.’

The talking must soon stop for Chelsea, who go into next week’s clash at Everton in desperate need of three points if they are not to meekly throw away the crown early.

Begovic said: ‘It’s been a slow start but it’s nothing the guys haven’t dealt with before. We’ll overcome it and prove people wrong.’
