Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam, has praised the time he spent holed up in a hotel room with rapper Eminem during his recent trip to Detroit last month.

The two had dinner together in the hotel room on August 25 in a meeting that, according to reports, lasted two-and-a-half-hours.

A spokesman for the Detroit branch of the Nation of Islam, Troy Muhammad, said the pair shared a 'beautiful discussion' about the roles that high-profile people like Eminem can play.

'Eminem was engaged,' Muhammad told The Detroit Free Press.

Muhammad continued: 'His manager (Paul Rosenberg) was engaged. It was a great time and experience.'

According to Muhammad, Farrakhan spoke to Eminem about 'using his influence and using his power through rap music and hip-hop culture to influence people positively, so our children, our youth, can grow into more positive humans'.

Farrakhan later posted a photo to Instagram about the meeting.

The caption of the photo said he 'was very honored to receive my brother, Marshall Mathers aka @eminem, last night at my dinner table for a beautiful dialogue'.

Eminem has not commented about his time with Farrakhan.

The curious meeting has piqued the interest of many.

Farrakhan famously branded Barack Obama a 'murderer' over the death of former Libya leader Colonel Gaddafi.

He has also been accused of being anti-Jewish.

Farrakhan met with two other hip hop artists during the visit, as well as about 250 local leaders.

Farrakhan was visiting Detroit and Southfield to drum up support for the Millions for Justice march he is organizing in Washington D.C. next month, 20 years after the Million Man March.

He said he intends to hold the rally October 10 on the National Mall, the same place where the original march took place in 1995.

Farrakhan says he is staging the march because 'this is the time our people must see our unity'.

The Million Man March was held October 16, 1995, with the goal of encouraging firmer commitments to family values among black men.

It is one of the largest political gatherings in American history, although there were disputes over how large a crowd it drew.
