'It's been difficult': Melissa Rivers remembers mom Joan Rivers on one-year anniversary of her death in touching tribute

Joan Rivers passed away at the age 81 on September 4, 2014 following complications from a surgical procedure on her vocal chords.

Melissa Rivers conceded that 'it's been difficult' without her mom in a wistful letter posted to the late comedienne's Twitter on Friday, which marks the one-year anniversary of her death.

The 47-year-old new co-host of Fashion Police shared all the 'firsts' she and her son Cooper have had to endure including birthdays and holidays.

'Today marks one year since my mother passed,' Melissa wrote. 'This was the year of firsts: first holidays, first birthdays, first everythings without mom, without grandma.

'While it's been difficult, I've been amazed by the outpouring of love and overwhelming kindness we've received from family, friends, and people whose lives were touched by the woman they knew as Joan -- a woman we all miss so very much.'

On Thursday. E! broadcast a special tribute show to mark the sad one-year anniversary of Joan's untimely death.

The hour-long special Remembering Joan was hosted by her daughter Melissa and featured some of the caustic comic's best Fashion Police moments.

Some of those funny flashbacks featured Kris Jenner, Big Sean and Ellie Kemper among others.

'We are remembering her the only way she would have wanted, and that's through laughter,' Melissa said at the start of the show. 'While Joan loved dogs, her favorite word was definitely more related to cats.'

Melissa added that being 'outrageous was normal for Joan Rivers,' who roasted the likes of Courtney Love, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and countless others.

Melissa, meanwhile, revealed how she and her son, who turns 15 this year, would be spending the first anniversary of Joan's death in an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this week.

'Cooper and I talk a lot about what would be the best way to honor her legacy, and the best way to honor her legacy is to be okay.'

She went on: 'I'm just going to have a glass of wine. [Cooper's] going to go to school, I'm going to go to work and come home and light a candle.'
