Thousands of refugees abandon Budapest station and start WALKING to Austria

Carrying their worldly belongings and even their young children in their arms (right), the migrants continue to march along the highway from Keleti railway station in Budapest towards Austria this evening (centre) after Hungarian authorities blocked them from boarding western-bound trains. The desperate refugees snaked through the capital in a line stretching nearly half a mile as they began the 100-mile journey to the Austrian border (left and inset). In chaotic scenes, thousands chanting 'Germany, Germany' streamed down the main highway from Budapest to Vienna while others sprinted onto railway tracks in Bicske, a town in northern Hungary, escaping a packed train held back by police for two days. In the commotion, a 51-year-old Pakistani man collapsed about 800 metres from the station and died despite efforts by medics to save him. It is believed he stumbled onto the tracks and hit his head in a desperate bid to flee police, who were clad in riot gear. Tonight, German and Austrian authorities announced they would allow migrants to enter their countries, while Hungary said it would lay on dozens of buses to ferry desperate refugees to their borders.

Indestructible 'water bear' bug that can survive in space could revolutionise computing

Water bear (Macrobiotus sapiens) in moss. Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a water bear in its active state. Water bears (or tardigrades) are tiny invertebrates that live in aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats such as lichen and damp moss. They require water to obtain oxygen by gas exchange. In dry conditions, they can enter a cryptobiotic state of desiccation, known as a tun, to survive. In this state, water bears can survive for up to a decade. This species was found in moss samples from Croatia. It feeds on plant and animal cells. Water bears are found throughout the world, including regions of extreme temperature, such as hot springs, and extreme pressure, such as deep underwater. They can also survive high levels of radiation and the vacuum of space. Magnification: x250 when printed 10cm wide.

Water bears, or tardigrades, have a remarkable ability to withstand extremes. Researchers studying them have created a new type of 'superglass' that could change computing.
