'There's no hiding on TV': Marvin Humes reveals he does 'hard' high-intensity workouts just to stay trim for the cameras

  • Marvin Humes exercises with a personal trainer three times a week
  • The 30-year-old said working out and training is 'hard'
  • Former JLS star will flex his muscles on ITV endurance show Ninja Warrior

As his television career continues to grow, Marvin Humes admits that he feels 'conscious' about looking good on screen.

The former JLS star, 30, revealed that he exercises with a personal trainer four times a week to stay in shape and shuns fast food. London-born Marvin, who married singer Rochelle Wiseman in July 2012, added that while he doesn't 'necessarily love working out' he enjoys the benefits afterwards.

'I don’t know if it's pressure but you’re definitely conscious that you need to keep in shape,' The Voice UK and This Morning presenter told FEMAIL. 'There’s no hiding on TV really so I definitely see it as something that I’m conscious of.'

After Marvin's X Factor foursome JLS called it a day in December 2013, the father-of-one no longer had the group's energetic routines to keep him trim and toned - so he enlisted the help of a personal trainer.

The pair do a mix of 'fast high rep' cardio moves and weight exercises using their bodies to push themselves to the limit.

'I definitely train two days a week at least,' he said. 'I aim for four days but that’s not always realistic - on average probably three sessions at an hour a time.

'I’ll get on the treadmill to warm up for ten minutes or so but then I’ll get in to full body workouts and weights. High intensity, high repetition, a little rest and build up to a good sweat and get my heart rate very high for virtually the whole hour and that’s how I justify my cardio.'

He added: 'I feel the benefit of training when I finish, and that’s my favourite part of the workout – when I’m on my last set. I don’t necessarily love working out and love training, it is hard.'

Despite juggling a busy family and work life, Marvin said he's 'strict' with himself and squeezes in a 'half an hour' workout when he can't get to the gym.

However there's one machine you'll never see Marvin flexing his muscles on: 'I don’t really enjoy rowing – that’s really hard. I can do it as a warm up and row for five minutes but I know some people get on the rower for like 20 minutes and bang it out but that’s not my favourite thing.'

As well as gruelling sessions, the Capital and Heart FM DJ makes sure he follows a healthy diet.

'I’m not crazy in to diets and watching what I eat. I’m just always quite sensible – everything in moderation. I don’t really eat loads of fast food and stuff like that,' he said.

His one vice, however, is jacket potatoes.

'I eat a lot of chicken and jacket potatoes,' he said. 'Within five minutes of training I’ll eat a jacket potato with tuna – that’s it, no mayonnaise or anything like that. I’ll eat that and then for the rest of the day, I make sure I eat a lot of greens, a lot of vegetables, protein.

'You know when you’re eating stuff that’s not great for you. I’m not one of these people that are a complete fanatic about food.'

Marvin is currently in training for a special edition of the hit ITV programme Ninja Warrior. He has been coaxed into doing the endurance challenge for charity by wife - and show host - Rochelle, 26.

'I’m one of those people at home that’s shouting at the TV saying, “Why didn’t you do this?” or “Why didn’t you do that?” and Rochelle is always like, “Why don’t you go up and do it and see how hard it is!”

'It’s always good because regardless of what you do on the day, the time you invest in your own body and fitness is always a good investment of time. It’s a good reason to keep fit when you set yourself a challenge like that.'

In the meantime music-loving Marvin is busy with a host of other projects. He will be on hand to provide the tunes at Sure Run To The Beat, a 10km race around London's Wembley Park, which is set to music.

'Combining fitness and music is such a natural combination, and I’m really excited - I can’t wait to be there and get the after party started!' he said.

Marvin is DJing at Sure Run to the Beat on 13th September 2015. Entries are available at www.runtothebeat.co.uk.
