  • A report says it's 18ins higher and 3ft wider and deeper than was approved
  • And a number of complaints have been made by neighbours about its size
  • Camden Council will take enforcement action, but Farhi is due to appeal

Fashion designer Nicole Farhi has angered neighbours with the 'huge and ugly' sculpture studio which she built at the back of her £5million home.

The celebrity sculptor built the 'modest' outbuilding at the Hampstead house she shares with her husband Sir David Hare.

The 69-year-old was given planning permission last year, but documents show it is 18ins higher and 3ft wider and deeper than was approved.

And a number of complaints have been made by neighbours about the size of the structure.

Farhi has used the facility for her showbiz friends, including Dame Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter and Bill Nighy, to pose for sculptures.

Neighbours Sasha and Richard Savage said: 'It is huge and ugly. Not "modest" by any means.

'The window on the south side looks straight over our garden into my disabled sister's bedroom, which my parents are understandably very unhappy and concerned about.

'We can see into their garden room and note that their sink is under the window so presumably when they are doing their washing up they will be staring straight at us.'

Another nearby resident, Marcus Linell, said: 'We have a sense that having disregarded the terms of the planning permission they are getting their way by stealth.

'The effect of the enlarged size is that our garden which was hitherto private is now overlooked from close quarters.'

In the documents, Camden Council said the studio 'harmed the garden setting of the neighbouring properties and the character of the conservation area'.

They are said to have agreed to plant trees along one side and replace windows with tinted glazing.
