He rightly describes them as a 'nightmare that makes you laugh' - and Spanish artist Xavier Solé Mora's scanfaces are becoming an internet hit.

The artist decided to scan his own face when he was bored on a rainy Sunday afternoon and was mesmerized by the result.

Xavier now creates horrifying yet hilarious images of human faces using only a scanner - and with his friends and family queuing up to become subjects - his Scanfaces album now has 41 images and counting.

Xavier said: 'It all started on a rainy and boring Sunday afternoon. To beat boredom, I just started scanning my face with no reason at all.

'The first scans didn't look good but after a few tests a totally flat image of my face just appeared: it was funny, stupid, beautiful but very disturbing at the same time.'

The 32-year-old Barcelona-born artist and creative director, who lives in South East London, creates each digital image in one shot without using Photoshop.

He has now created numerous images of friends and family as well as persuading people he admires, such as artist Joan Fontcuberta and songwriter Quimi Portet, to take part in the project.

'The images are almost like a nightmare that makes you laugh,' Xavier added.

Xavier, who is a lecturer at Ravensbourne College in Greenwich, wants people to scan their own faces and send him their images for his gallery.
