note: Apologies, signups were not supposed to start here until they were available globally. Any editor can now either apply here, or on Meta, or on German Wikipedia. Please only apply in one place. Signups can also take place in any community that has a Wikipedia Library page: we very much want to host signups on other European languages, but need someone local to set them up. Remember that we have plenty of accounts and lots more if needed; we will not run out. If you have thoughts or want to help, please comment on the talk page.

De Gruyter is a scholarly publisher specializing in academic literature in a variety of subject areas. They have generously offered the use of 1000 accounts to access all of the electronic resources available through De Gruyter Online, which include ebooks and journals in arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, theology/religion, medicine, mathematics, law and general reference. Their offerings include resources in English, German, and several other languages. All initial accounts will be issued for a full year.

Requirements[edit]

  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 6 months old
  • You have a minimum of 500 edits to the encyclopedia
  • You are active in content generation, research, and/or verification work
  • You do not already have free access to De Gruyter resources through another avenue

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered

Expectations[edit]

Approved editors may

  • Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
  • Electronically save portions of restricted content
  • Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
  • Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the De Gruyter website they are accessing

Approved editors will not

  • Share their account logins or passwords with others, or sell their access to other parties
  • Mass scrape or mass download De Gruyter content
  • Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
  • Process data or datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
  • Display any copyrighted images or pictures which are in De Gruyter works without permission of De Gruyter

Private and confidential information

  • You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. By applying, you understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, The Wikipedia Library, and De Gruyter. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or De Gruyter), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

Citation[edit]

  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a De Gruyter resource, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free De Gruyter pages
  • Editors should note "(subscription required)" in the citation (either through the "|subscription = " variable in {{cite}} templates or {{subscription required}}), where appropriate
Example
<ref> {{cite book |chapter=Indira Gandhi |title=Makers of Modern Asia |year=2014|editor=Guha, Ramachandra|author=Raghavan, Srinath|url=http://www.degruyter.com/view/books/harvard.9780674735781/harvard.9780674735781.c10/harvard.9780674735781.c10.xml|isbn=9780674735781|publisher=Harvard University Press| via = [[De Gruyter]]|subscription=yes}}</ref>

Further participation[edit]

Here are a few ways you could help The Wikipedia Library effectively leverage this partnership:

  • Add {{Wikipedia:De Gruyter/Userbox}} to your user boxes if you have access to this database. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.
  • TWL is interested in having guest bloggers. Guest blogging gives the opportunity for both The Wikipedia Library and De Gruyter to profile our partnership, and it gives the guest bloggers a new platform to share their editing experience with others (which is good for the Wikimedia community).

Update 25.01.2015[edit]

All the people listed under Approved accounts should have a mail with a token and instructions in their inbox by now. If not lt me know. The next batch will be processed in the first week of February so if you got the link to the form and did not fill it out yet now is the time to do so.--Saehrimnir (talk) 08:17, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
