About this board

Post your feedback about using the visual editor.

If you have never provided feedback before, you can learn how to do it effectively. If you are reporting a problem directly on this page, please include your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin (usually Vector, sometimes Monobook). The feedback tool within the visual editor will include your user agent details instead.

You can use this page to tell the Wikimedia developers your ideas and issues about using the visual editor: this is the only feedback page actively monitored by WMF staff. The Contributors team welcomes your feedback and ideas, especially on user interface decisions and the priorities for adding new features. All comments are read, in any language, but personal replies are not guaranteed. Please note that the Wikimedia Foundation does not provide support for installing VisualEditor on third-party wikis. Please report bugs involving Parsoid at Talk:Parsoid instead.

You may also want to read a guide to optimize the visual editor's experience on your site, which details work necessary on the community side (such as translating or setting up citation systems).

Selection buffer "pastings" are rich text and mess up syntax colouring

1
Arlo Barnes (talkcontribs)

Recently I selected the title of a Wikipedia article to selection-buffer-"paste" it into a link on a separate talk page using mouse button 3 (middle-click). However the h1-style formatting was also "pasted", and from then on it was like the editor had two layers, the syntax-coloured text including the header-formatted title, and plain text behind. They even scrolled separately and it could not be fixed until the page was reloaded (my work was lost). It seems VE uses `contenteditable`, which needs additional code to behave so that it ignores formatting (anyone who wishes can test this fact by making an opening a bookmark with URL data:text/html,<html contenteditable>).

@Rosa Vill, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario_discusión:Rosa_Vill explains why your edits are being reverted. You can follow the links on the page to learn more. Are you copying and pasting the text from somewhere else? If you want to set the text to the default size, you can select it and then look for the "Grande" option in the "Estilo de texto" -- "Mas" menu. This will un-set it as big in your case (as it is currently set as such).

@A griffin of poland, hi, have you tried to remove all the content except for the redirect code?

The link points to a non existing page, and automatic translation doesn't help me understand whether there's really an issue with the visual editor there.

Issue

It is impossible to access certain menus / toolbars / buttons without the mouse.

Proposed solution

Add a key to trigger a keyboard accelerator (see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms646337(v=vs.85).aspx for full description)

When the user presses the key (e.g. ALT) the relevant menu or button gets an underline to denote the trigger for it, e.g. to access page settings one could press ALT + P.

Add a general key shortcut to access the menu, typically on several operating systems this is keyboard key F10, for most (all ?) applications in it.

Note that this is distinct from the "normal" keyboard shortcuts. Accelerators tend to be context dependent and can trigger in any dialog or interface that has options or buttons.

The links list is weird while editing a table

Awewewe (talkcontribs)

Good afternoon,

I saw an error while editing an article with a table. While editing normal text, the links are normal (they are showing down), but in the tables, the links list is sometimes showing up, which is not normal (before, it was always showing down). The links lists, which are something showing up, are also getting very far from the editing area, being covered only with the tools list up from the editing area. See my screenshots at cswiki: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TableError1.png, and on enwiki: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TableError2.png. Thank you for fixing.

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Thanks for your message. That issue doesn't happen to me in 2 browsers (Safari and Opera on a MacBook Air). Please include details about your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin. Also, could you please try to append &safemode=1 at the end of the URL and try to reproduce. TY!

Awewewe (talkcontribs)

@Elitre (WMF): I use Google Chrome, operating system Windows 10 and Vector skin. Appending &safemode=1 doesn't help. Thank you for your answer.

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

OK. Let's see if someone with that config can also reproduce - throwing all of this into Phabricator isn't a big deal.

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Stumbled on that myself, so there we go.

Built-in feedback function button confusion

Summary by Elitre (WMF)
Jberkel (talkcontribs)

I tried to leave a message here automatically from within the VE, using "Submit feedback". I entered text, then clicked on "File a technical task" which redirects to Phabricator (and loses the already entered feedback). It seems like a useful function to have but the placement/label of the button is confusing, I mistook it for the submit button of my feedback ("File technical task *instead*")

It might be better to have it as a link inline with the text, maybe also to explicitly mention Phabricator. Alternatively, have it as another option in the Help menu: "Leave feedback / File technical task".

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@Jberkel, as much as I agree with you, the related task is low priority. :/

Jberkel (talkcontribs)

@Elitre (WMF) thanks, good to know you're aware of the problem. even some small changes to the copy would make a big difference. you could even argue that it should just be removed (if you click on "feedback" you want to leave feedback, not file a bug).
