Troops die in Afghan plane crash

Three American troops were killed when a military plane crashed shortly after take-off in eastern Afghanistan.

Seven others were injured in the crash 35 miles southwest of Gardez, capital of the troubled eastern Paktia province.

The MC-130 transporter plane crashed about three miles after leaving a forward operating base near the Bande Sardeh dam.

The 10 passengers included three special forces and seven air force personnel. Two of the dead were airmen. One woman had been on board but she was not among the dead, whose names have yet to be released.

An investigation is under way but the crash does not appear to have been caused by hostile fire.
