Tebow's time is up in Philadelphia and Devon Still's run in Cincinnati has come to an end as the Eagles and Bengals announced their last cuts before the NFL's roster deadline at 4pm on Saturday.

The Eagles released Tim Tebow on Saturday along with 21 other players even though the popular quarterback had seemingly secured a roster spot when Philadelphia traded Matt Barkley to Arizona.

But coach Chip Kelly cut Tebow despite a strong performance at the New York Jets on Thursday, stopping the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner's bid to return to the NFL after missing two seasons.

The coach of the Bengals, Marvin Lewis, apparently made a similar decision and Still, a defensive tackle best known because of his daughter's battle with cancer, was also released on Saturday.

The second-round pick from 2012 also was cut last year, but the Bengals offered him a chance to stay on the practice squad to keep his medical coverage for his daughter Leah.

He was added to the roster and played in 12 games while his five-year-old child battled successfully off the field to overcome cancer and is now in remission, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Since the team kept him on the roster last season, Still and his daughter have five years of NFL health insurance regardless of whether the free agent latches on with another squad or not.

Still tweeted his thanks to the Bengals and the city after he was released during the cutdown.

He said: 'Have nothing but love for the Bengals organization and the city of Cincinnati.

'Both helped me through one of the darkest times of my life and I am forever grateful.

'It's time to move forward and see what's next #iKnowThereIsAPlanForMe.'

Tebow had a Twitter message of his own on Saturday.

The outspoken Christian said: 'Thanks @Eagles and Coach Kelly for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love! Romans 8:28 #Blessed.'

The Eagles currently have only two quarterbacks on the roster: Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.

Bradford looked sharp in limited preseason action, but he had surgery to repair a torn left ACL twice since he last played in a regular-season game in October 2013.

It's possible Tebow returns to the Eagles if either Bradford or Sanchez get hurt.

He also can come back after the season opener and his contract won't be guaranteed.

For now, the Eagles are going forward without him.

Tebow was 11 for 17 for 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Jets.

He showed his accuracy has improved since his first stint in the NFL.

Tebow finished the preseason 21 of 36 for 286 yards, two TDs and one interception.

He also ran for 82 yards and one TD.

Tebow last played in a regular-season game with the Jets in 2012 and was cut by New England in training camp in 2013 before working as a college football analyst on the SEC Network last year.

Still gave an emotional speech about his daughter's cancer battle when the 26-year-old and Leah were named the recipients of the Jimmy V. Award at the ESPY's in Los Angeles.

Since his daughter couldn't travel to attend the awards, Still accepted it in her honor and brought the audience to tears as he described what it was like when Leah was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of pediatric cancer.

He said during the speech: 'The way I looked at it was, I was blessed with the ability to play football, and by the age of 26, I was able to experience things a lot of people don't in their life.

'And by the age of four, my daughter hadn't even [begun] to understand what life was all about.

'My daughter being only five she couldn't understand the sacrifice I was making for her as a parent.

'She just knew that she wanted her dad and I wasn't there all the time.

'You know that really hurt me and made me feel like I wasn't a father.

'I would grab my fiancée's hand and every night we would drop to our knees and we would pray to God that I didn't lose my daughter while I was in Cincinnati and that she was able to fight so that when I got home we could make up for the time that was lost.

'And that time, God answered my prayers, because my daughter went into remission.'
