And whether she is speaking out against transphobia or posing in a swimsuit, the actress does her best to break down barriers.
Tweeting 'Trans is beautiful,' the actress posed for a series of shots while wearing an elaborate swimsuit on Friday.

And she was back on the beach on Saturday in another Instagram of herself in a sizzling black wrap swimsuit.
She captioned it: 'Day 2 on #FireIsland and time for another #ImpromptuFireIslandPhotoShoot shot by @jonofreedrix on my galaxy 6 edge #TransIsBeautiful,' giving a shout out to her actor-producer pal Jono Freedrix.

Laverne plays Sophia Burset on the hit Netflix show, a role that has seen her nominated for a Primetime Emmy.
She uses her popularity to lobby for greater acceptance of the trans community, often speaking out on issues.
Last month she addressed transphobia, speaking with emotion about the high numbers of trans women murdered.

'I'm really sick of talking about trans women being murdered... I'm so sick of talking about it,' she said, almost choking up, during her TimesTalk interview.
'I talk about it all the time. But 21 transgender women have been found murdered this year.'
She also addressed how to deal with people who say cruel things, insisting that while there are justifiable times to get angry, if you are dealing with someone you love and who is capable of listening, it is not always correct to go on the counter-offensive

'It's important to have empathy - and maybe it's because I'm an artist - to have empathy for people who might say offensive, homophobic, transphobic, sexist things. To have empathy for those people the same way that I would like them to have empathy for me.
'Not in a Stockholm Syndrome kind of way, but trying to understand where they are coming from with their perspective, and offer something else,' she continued.
'I get angry too, but we have to be able to give space to our anger. There's some people who you can change their mind, and some people you can't - I try to let those people go.'
