Officials said the woman was not injured. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

Just three weeks ago the Guardian Angels volunteers made a pointed return to the park for the first time in more than two decades - citing a 26 per cent rise in crime there so far this year.

The crime-fighting squad in red jackets and berets said they would patrol the park for one night a week. It is not known if they were in the park on Thursday.

They were a familiar sight around New York City in the 1980s and 90s, when it suffered from more lawlessness.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa said last month that crime had 'got better' until recently. 'That's why you need to nip it in the bud now,' he added.
