Vlad the fashionista: Russian leader Putin wore £2,000 silk and cashmere tracksuit for photoshoot stunt in the gym, experts reveal

  • Vladimir Putin was pictured in a silk tracksuit while working out in the gym
  • Now emerged it was by luxury Italian brand Lora Piana and cost £2,000
  • His gym outfit is in direct contrast to his image as a man of simple tastes

Wearing a grey tracksuit, a fitted white T-shirt and a pair of trainers, Vladimir Putin looked like any ordinary gym goer during a photo call while he worked out.

But on closer inspection it has been revealed that the Russian president was actually wearing a £2,000 cashmere and silk tracksuit by a luxury Italian firm.

Pictures of the 63-year-old pumping iron first emerged earlier this week and showed him in a gym in Sochi alongside Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Striding into the gym with Medvedev, the Russian president seemed to be at ease, quickly showing off his strength with an easy arm workout on the cable crossover.

But according to the Times, sharp-eyed fashionistas have said that Putin wore a £990 grey hoodie with matching grey sweatpants, which retail for £1,175, by the brand Lora Piana.

His gym outfit is in direct contrast to the image portrayed by the Kremlin, that the president is a man of simple tastes with a liking for popular sports and active outdoor pastimes, only drawing a salary of £74,000.

It also comes at a time when 18 million Russians are classified as poverty stricken – a staggering 13 per cent of the population.

The Russian economy has taken a down turn in recent months due to financial sanctions imposed by the West and falling oil prices.

However, it is not the first time that Putin has been accused of having extravagant tastes.

Earlier this year, it emerged that he planted a vineyard in a stunning Spanish mansion, he reportedly bought and developed for some £15million.

Putin’s grand home near Marbella is in the Malaga province of Benahavis and comes complete with stunning northern views of the Serrania de Ronda mountain range.

It is also believed that he insisted on 25 vines from the top Burgos-based Bodega ‘Pingus’ – some 500 miles from the Costa del Sol - to be planted into a series of sun-soaked terraces surrounding his new mansion high in the Marbella Hills.

In 2012, it also emerged that Putin has a collection of expensive watches, worth almost £500,000.

The centrepiece is said to be a £300,000 Tourbograph by German watchmaker A Lange & Sohne, which is made from platinum and has a crocodile skin strap.

He has also been seen wearing a £39,000 Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar and a £7,000 Blancpain watch called Leman Aqya Lugn Grande Date.
