Teddy Sheringham: Wayne Rooney needs a trophy to match Sir Bobby Charlton
- Teddy Sheringham doesn't believe Wayne Rooney will consider himself an equal to Sir Bobby Charlton until he wins a trophy
- Rooney equalled Charlton's 49 England goals vs San Marino on Saturday
- Sheringham scored 14 goals in 51 internationals between 1993 and 2002
Former Manchester United and England striker Teddy Sheringham doesn't think Wayne Rooney will consider himself an equal to Sir Bobby Charlton unless he wins a World Cup or European Championship.
Sheringham, who scored 14 goals in 51 internationals between 1993 and 2002, said: 'He won't be up there with Bobby Charlton, all the others like Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer maybe.
'But Bobby won something for England. You ask Shearer or Lineker, what does it all mean and they will say you are in football to win things, and that is what is disappointing for those players, and Rooney.

Sheringham talks with Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein about the talent of England striker Rooney
'It is nice for him to have that record but he would give away all those goals to win something for England.
'Rooney was like Gazza, he came on the scene and it was, 'You've got to play him'. Some players you see and you have to put them straight in.'
Another former England forward Mark Hateley has backed Rooney to play on for many more years and put the goal-scoring record out of sight for future generations.
Hateley, who played in the 1986 World Cup, thinks Rooney can play on past Russia 2018. 'If he can keep himself hungry, why not?' he said. 'There is a lot more football left in him.'
