Driver, 56, crushed to death by steamroller he was operating after falling into road

A man died when he fell out of the steamroller he was driving and it ran over him, crushing him to death.

The worker, 56, is thought to have slipped out of the front of the vehicle before it ran him over.

Horrified onlookers called emergency services who rushed to the scene near a farm in Colerne, Wiltshire to help the victim.

But, the man died from his injuries before paramedics and colleagues in a rapid response vehicle and ambulance could get to him.

A spokeswoman for Great Western Ambulance Service said: 'We got a call on Monday morning at 8.14am with a report that a male in his 50s had fallen from a roller.

'He was not conscious or breathing due to traumatic injuries that he suffered.

'When our staff arrived, they confirmed that the patient was deceased at the scene.

'We believe that he fell from the roller and then it rolled over him.'

A police spokesman said: 'Wiltshire Police attended a report of a seriously injured man following what appears to be an accident involving an industrial roller near to a farm in Bath Road, Colerne at 8.23am on Monday 13th August 2012.

'Sadly, the 56 year old local man was deceased at the scene. His family have been informed but formal identification has not yet been completed.'

Investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are ongoing.
