Two Texas high school football players suspended as 'extremely disturbing' video shows them HIT a referee from behind before diving on top of him

Two high school football players have been suspended after they tackled a referee from behind before diving into him as he laid on the ground.

Sickening video of the incident shows one player from John Jay High School, in San Antonio, running five yards at the official before hitting him hard in the back as he watched a play.

A second player, standing a few yards away, then dives into the man as he lays senseless on the floor, leading in with his helmet before play is stopped.

The attack happened during John Jay game against Marble Falls High School, in Marble Falls, which they went on to lose 15-9.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, the incident took place in the last minute of the game as Marble Falls were looking to run down the clock.

Two John Jay players had already been ejected from the field during two earlier plays, though it is not clear what their offences were.

After apparently getting angry with the decisions, two John Jay defensive backs decided to take matters into their own hands as Marble Falls executed a handoff toward the left scrimmage line.

As the play starts one of the John Jay defensive backs, wearing a number 12 jersey, starts running towards the referee from the five yard line.

Running full tilt he then shoulder-barges the official, who is stood watching the play, hard in the back - sending him flying to the ground with enough force to knock his hat off.

The second defensive back, who also began running from the five-yard line and appears to be wearing jersey 91, then dives into the official as he is on the ground.

The play was immediately stopped and both Jay players were ejected from the field, officials said.

Pascual Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Northside Independent School District, called footage of the foul 'extremely disturbing' and said an investigation is being launched.

He said a hearing is now due to be held including interviews with officials, coaches and students.

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game, before adding: 'I've coached 14 years and I've never seen anything like it.'

According to reports after the game, the official was 'very upset' by what happened, and could be planning legal action.

The penalties resulting from the illegal tackle handed Marble Falls a first down, and they were able to run out the clock for a 15-9 win. 

Marble Falls had opening the scoring in the game within just minutes of the starting whistle as they completed a 53 yard drive in 12 plays to bring the score to 7-0, according to the Daily Trib.

John Jay tied the score shortly afterwards with a 10-yard throw for a touchdown, before an end-zone sack of the Marble Falls quarterback left the score at 9-7.

However, with just over nine minutes left in the game, Marble Falls ran in another touchdown plus a two-point conversion to bring the score to 15-9, which is how it finished.
