Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard is withdrawing from women’s and mixed doubles competitions at the US Open after falling and hitting her head in the locker room.

Bouchard, 21, sustained a head injury when she slipped and fell on Friday evening, after catching the eyes of the crowd as she and Aussie tennis bad-boy Nick Kyrgios flirted their way through the first round of the mixed doubles draw.

She was scheduled to play her second-round matches in both the women's doubles with Russian Elena Vesnina and mixed doubles with Kyrgios on Saturday.

US Open Tournament Director David Brewer said in a statement that it is unknown if Bouchard will compete in the singles competition, according to Sports Illustrated.

His statement read: ‘Following the competition yesterday evening, Ms. Bouchard slipped and fell in the locker room and sustained a head injury.

The severity of the injury was and continues to be assessed by the on-site medical personnel at the US Open. The medical staff recommended that Ms Bouchard withdraw from today's competitions, and Ms Bouchard is following that advice.

It appeared Bouchard was happy to look past the negative attention shrouding Kyrgios after his well publicized sexual taunt against Swiss opponent Stanislas Wawrinka in Montreal last month.

In a post-match press conference, an elated Bouchard gushed about Kyrgios and the entertaining match, saying, 'It was super fun, he's just a really funny guy - I was laughing like the whole time.'

Messages quickly flooded twitter about the dynamic new partnership, with one user suggesting that the game ran 'more like a first date', with 'sexual tension through the roof.'

The highly flirtatious behaviour began straight off the bat, as Kyrgios playfully apologized on court to a fatigued Bouchard, saying, 'I feel bad, you have to rest! I'm keeping you out here' .

One memorable moment included a teasing finger wag from Bouchard after Kyrgios whinged to his partner about wanting to throw his racket, as she said, 'No you're not! Don't do it - it's not worth it!'

A sweaty celebratory hug initiated by Kyrgios after the match was received hilariously by a hesitant Bouchard - summed up brilliantly by her shocked facial expression.

The Canadian star, who defeated Slovakian Dominika Cibulková in a thrilling three-set match earlier in the day, shrugged off questions probing whether the on-court chemistry translated off the courts.

She said that while she had known Kyrgios since her junior years, they had 'never hung out or anything'.

She then added, 'I think he's so funny and interesting, and good for the game, so I support him. He's very nice and humble.'

When an interviewer asked who initiated the pairing, Bouchard replied, 'you can ask him.'

'I asked her,' Kyrgios laughed. 'There were a lot of people involved, of course. She's a very hard person to get in touch with these days. But when I had the opportunity to play with her I thought it would be a good idea, a lot of fun. I'm glad she accepted.'

The exciting pair won their match too, defeating Ukraine's Elina Svitolina and New Zealand's Artem Sitak 5-7 6-3 (10-3) in a final-set super tiebreak.

Bouchard is due to play her women's singles fourth-round match against Italian Roberta Vinci on Sunday, but a decision on whether she will compete has still to be made.
