A high school football player in Louisiana died on Friday night after he 'suffered a neck injury' on a punt return during a game, according to police.

Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore at Franklin Parish High in Winnsboro, was wheeled off the field on a stretcher in the fourth quarter and taken to the emergency room.

Local reports initially said he was being treated in hospital for his injuries, but Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirmed that the player had died at 10:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Cameron, who was described as a five-foot-seven, 167 pounds sophomore linebacker for the Franklin Parish team had been playing against Sterlington on Friday night.

After news of his death reached his teammates and the local community, tributes poured in for the athlete on social media from people who described him as 'humble' and 'a great guy.'

A picture showing high school cheerleaders clutching each other in a circle as they said prayers for Cameron was tweeted after he was rushed to the emergency room.

The school also paid tribute to the star athlete on Twitter, according to USA Today.

It tweeted: 'Tyrell will live on in the memory of those who loved him. Prayers for his family. Support from throughout the state is greatly appreciated.'

@ashlynduck1 tweeted: 'Who knew that playing the game you love could end so tragically? Prayers going out to Franklin parish & Sterlington as well.'

Aaron Monnin, one of Cameron's team mates who played on the football team at Franklin Parish last season told USA Today 'He was humble.'

'He was very instinctive and had overwhelming potential. We would tell him how good he was going to be and he never accepted it. He would just flash us a grin and shake his head.

'He listened to coaching and advice from upperclassmen. He listened to everything somebody would tell him.

'He worked hard and would pay attention to little things, man. He would pay attention to how big splits were on the offensive line, to see if we're pulling or not. He was a great guy.

'There's a lot more I could say but words just wouldn't do it justice.'
