For 9 years I struggled with anorexia and bulimia. What started as an innocent "diet" quickly spiraled into a deep addiction. I thought I was in control of everything and that by controlling every aspect of food and minute of exercise that I had a handle on my life. When I couldn't control things around me, I felt I could control things within me. After being diagnosed, I remember saying to my mother that "I can stop anytime I want to," and I truly believed that. As my health declined, I started to realize more and more how paralyzingly impossible it felt for me to change my behaviors. I had no hope and my world was consumed 24/7 with my eating disorder. It wasn't until I opened up my life to Christ that I truly started the process of recovery. I was filled with a renewed sense of hope that maybe I didn't have to handle the world on my own, and that I had a future. It was not a smooth path from that point on, and relapse and returns to treatment centers occurred, but the difference was that I truly believed I had something to fight for. As i've moved further and further from the eating disorder, my relationship with Christ has only strengthened. I consider myself recovered, and I thank God in prayer every day for guiding my life as He has done, and continues to do. I do believe things happen to us for a reason, and I am currently working in the behavioral health field as a health coach, helping others along their own paths to recovery. // - Jen, @jenruns84 #CelebrateRecovery #RecoveryWins #12stepstochange #AddictionRecoveryMonth #EatingDisorderAwareness

Daughters in My Kingdom, is a fantastic book for all to read. In step 1 LDS ARP, it said," In what ways are you of infinite worth?" This was a hard question for me, and not easy to process. Most of my life I was treated as a child; as I grew up it didnt help being manipulated by Satan. I felt worthless, no one cared so why should I? As I worked through this question the title of this book hit me, that I am a daughter of a King, no longer to I need to feel worthless in his eyes I'm royalty. Never let anyone or anything different, your worth it to him. #12stepstochange #addictionisreal #christ #LDS #addictionrecoverymonth

When my oldest child was 15, we found out she had been regularly sneaking out at night. She became disobedient, started drinking, and was caught in several lies. It got to the point where we put her in counseling, and my husband and I would have regular meetings with the counselor also, to help us get through this time. Everything came to a head when she told us that she was going to live her own life, and there was nothing we could do to stop her. Her counselor suggested that we look into different treatment programs. We found one for youth that was very intensive, and it broke our heart to put her in there, but at that point, we really didn’t know what to do. Besides that, we had four younger children in our home that were being affected by everything that was going on. The program required that when the youth got to a certain point in their recovery, they were allowed to come home nights and weekends. With that freedom though, came responsibility. They were required to bring other youth home with them that were also in the program. My daughter was in the program for 15 months, and in that time we had around 100 girls staying (in groups of 2 to 8 at a time) in our home. We were required to go to a family meeting every week, and attended counseling sessions. We also were asked to participate in the 12-step program. I begrudgingly did it because it would look good for me to be acknowledged in the big family meeting as having completed my program. But, I didn’t understand why I needed to, it was my daughter that had the problem. My daughter did not graduate the program. She has been in and out of jail, lived out of her car, and has relied on friends for a place to live. She still struggles. It wasn’t until much later that my epiphany came on the 12 twelve-step recovery program when I came to realize that I couldn’t change and control those closest to me that were struggling. I am only responsible and accountable for what I do with MY life. I can love them and pray for them, but ultimately they are the only ones that can change themselves. // - Lori, @lolawid #CelebrateRecovery #RecoveryWins #12stepstochange #AddictionRecoveryMonth

I'm the worst type of sinner. I've had tons of friends that were users, but I reasoned that SINCE I wasn't a stinking a needle in my arm, I was better than them. After all, alcohol and porn is much more assessable, therefore it can't be THAT wrong. I'm not proud of that mindset and I realize how unbelievably misguided I was to think that. We are not so different. Drug users. Alcoholics. Sex Workers. Bishops. Relief Society Presidents. The guy serving hamburgers at McDonalds. We are looking to be healed in some form or capacity. "Come to believe that the Power of God can restore you to complete spiritual health." That's for all of us. None of us are perfect in our faith. We all struggle, question and doubt. We all fail. But, there is always hope. That hope will carry us. Sustain us. Make us better. Don't give up. Whatever you are struggling with, I promise it WILL get better. Don't let your faith fall apart, but let it fall together. God isn't looking for a "know it all," just a humble believer willing to call out "help." Thank you Preston for your story. Thank you for your humility and courage. #12StepstoChange #Mormon #addiction #LDS #mormonchannel #ShareGoodness #ShareYourStory #addictionrecoverymonth

Step 2: HOPE - come to believe that the spirit of God can restore you to complete spiritual health. Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God, and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the father: Ye shall have eternal life. // {2nd Nephi 31:20} It can be so hard to feel deserving of the Lord's Grace, but the second you have accepted that you cannot do this without him, he has laid his mercy and Grace upon you. The hardest part is to open your heart to the tender mercies of the Lord. That despite your addiction or mental illness, the Lord will create opportunities to show and work his love in your life. @mormonchannel second video is linked in our bio. Good morning friends. Be lovers AND fighters. ❤️👊 Love is worth fighting for. I share my story, our story, not because I haven't let go of hurt or pain or haven't forgiven or am bitter. No, I share because God has worked a mighty change in our lives and others deserve to know that hope exists. I share because I marvel at the love and grace God has made manifest in my life. I fight because I want better for my children and society as a whole. I fight because I have seen the tide coming, I know the tsunami is at hand, I know the misinformation. And I fight because I am angry. I feel anger and frustration at the judgments, gossiping, the assumptions, the shame, the lack of understanding and willingness to understand, the secrecy that still exists... I feel angry at these insidious ways that Satan gets in with good people, broken people, God's people. I want a world that better understands mental health: addiction AND trauma and human patterns of behavior and physiological effects on the brain. I want a world that is vulnerable and real, that accepts others in their imperfections and acknowledges we are all imperfect. I want a world where it is okay to not be okay and that that doesn't have to have some meaning about how religious or resilient or smart or strong you are. I believe that we can create a better world for ourselves and our children by having more compassion- for BOTH sides of the street. I believe that understanding breeds compassion and I hope that the #12stepstochange project brings about an awareness that will contribute to that. I applaud the @mormonchannel for not sugar coating what is a painful reality for many. Yes, I will probably post a lot for #addictionrecoverymonth and I want to make it clear it isn't because I want to harp on a 'bad' thing. Quite the opposite in fact. I fight and share and love, because God has made manifest to me in a very real, tangible, undeniable way just how very much He loves and cares for the One, the broken, and how He yearns to reach those and have others run to their rescue. ❤️I fight because I love❤️ #fightforlove #fightthenewdrug #pornkillslove #ftnd #loverandafighter #pictapgo_app #mytestimony
Today sept 2nd, step two. Hope. #12stepstochange #hope twitter.com/mormonchannel/…
I struggled with various addictions for quite a few years. I also tried quitting for about the same amount of years. As the years progressed I began to believe that I would never beat my addictions. It wasn't until I turned to my Savior that I had any chance of getting better. I will admit that my recovery was not an ideal one and there was occasional relapses but in the end I was able to kick my unhealthy and immoral habits. The hardest part for me was realizing that I was worth saving, for a long time I felt unworthy of repentance and forgiveness but those feelings are just the adversary trying to keep his hold on you. Through Christ everything is possible, even helping someone as lowly as I. I do still struggle with some of the addictions but I know that with Christ by my side I will be able to remain strong. // - Anonymous submission. #CelebrateRecovery #RecoveryWins #12stepstochange #AddictionRecoveryMonth

No one can ever know the power of your pain, but Christ did. The Mormon Channel is rocking the big guns with their first video, am I right? I love it! Can I be honest? This one is a tough one for me and I was so hoping it wasn't going to be the first. It touches really close to home, not only with my own addictions, but also with my days stripping and as nude model. It's tough to hear "the other guy's" story. You learn to be cold and disconnected. This story is just a reconfirmation that every decision we make, we are truly connected to each other. What we do matters, but more importantly what we do matters to God. There is a reason why honesty is the first step. Honest confession is a way to silence the shaming voices. The secrets we try so hard to hide, they begin to control us. When we voluntarily share them with our church community, we break their power. We can not do it on our own (and this story is a beautiful example). We need help. And you are not weak to ask for it. WE might be powerless to overcome our addictions, but we serve of God who has ALL power and whose speciality is bringing "dead" things to life. Thank you David for your radical honesty and bravery. #12StepstoChange

For 11 years I suffered from a disease I was unaware I had. I broke my bongs, pipes, and other devices numerous times in effort to quit. I woke up sick each day saying “I’m never going to drink again”. With denial as my best friend, I constantly told myself I could quit if I wanted to, drugs had medicinal purposes, and tried convincing myself I was not an addict. As I hid in my bathroom and as my family almost came to a crashing end, I knew I had to do something. I exhausted all options I came up with. Willing to try anything, I allowed Christ into my life when all I had left was hope. Hoping I could quit, and searching for a way. Almost 3 months later, I have the most freedom I have ever had in my entire life. I never could have quit if I didn’t try to let Christ help me. Now, I’m in charge of my choices. Today, I’m a free man. Tomorrow, I’ll be sober again. Thanks to Christ, the 12 step program, and others who shared their stories of recovery and filled me with hope. // - Tom, @phx_2rings #CelebrateRecovery #RecoveryWins #12stepstochange #AddictionRecoveryMonth
