MAN KILLED IN MOTORWAY ACCIDENT

A man has died in a crash which has closed part of a busy motorway.

The accident involving a car and a lorry caused the truck to overturn on the M6 at about 4.55am, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The motorway's northbound carriageway is currently closed between Junction 4 for Coleshill near Birmingham and Junction 4a and is due to remain so for most of the morning, police said.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a car and a lorry that had been in a serious collision, the impact of which caused the lorry to roll over.

"The passenger of the car suffered multiple serious injuries.

"Unfortunately it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Medics said the car's driver, in his 30s, had freed himself from the wreck and was apparently uninjured although he was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The lorry driver, thought to be in his 50s, was taken to hospital with suspected fractured ribs.

The Central Motorway Police Group has urged drivers to "avoid the area".

As a result of the crash, the M42 northbound exit slip road at Junction 7 is also expected to remain closed for much of the morning.
