'He slapped my wife in the face with $20 bills': Columbus Short on why he knocked man unconscious in bar fight

Columbus Short is finally talking about his alleged bar room brawl that took place in March.

The 31-year-old claims in a new interview that what led him to knock a man unconscious while at a party attended by both his friends and family in Los Angeles was his estranged wife's honour.

Short, formerly a star on Scandal, said that he was defending Tanee McCall, who has since filed a restraining order against him and claimed spousal abuse.

The actor told Atlanta's V-103 radio station: 'I had to defend my wife at a bar. This man was being highly, highly disrespectful... slapping her in the face with $20 bills.'

He added that the man, Felton Hyche III, was 'talking to her too much' and that things 'got to a point, you know, it got to that point and I had to defend myself.'

In an attempt to explain who Felton is in relationship to him he stated: 'He's my nephew's uncle.'

'He was drunk and I was sober,' Short went on to explain. 'So I had my patience about me for about

45 minutes until you know he put his arms around me, dragged me outside... tried to big boss me.'

'He took his jersey off and came at me and I had to end it. That's it,' the television star concluded.

The incident allegedly occurred on March 15, at Gabe's Bar and Grill in L.A and a photo obtained by gossip site TMZ shows the victim in a neck brace and unconscious before being taken to a local hospital.

According to sources. Short punched his 37-year-old victim in the face, and knocked him to the ground at an engagement party where Felton had allegedly insulted Short's estranged wife.

The actor reportedly got angry after the other gentleman said: ‘You might be richer than me but I get my girls to buy me everything I want including your wife.’

Since that time Short has plead not guilty to felony battery for the fight in a hearing in May.

He also faces a misdemeanor spousal battery case and his estranged wife has a temporary restraining order against him.

The actor's attorney Jeff Jacquet has said Short will contest the restraining order and it will require a lengthy evidentiary hearing.

In addition, TMZ reports that Short met with Dallas businessman Ed Butowsky, who told the gossip website that the star has realized he needs help following all of his legal trouble.

Butowsky said the topic of drinking weighed heavily on the conversation but that Short does not believe he is an alcoholic.

He did, however, admit that he has been getting drunk with greater frequency than he should, and is vowing to cut back.

Meanwhile, Short announced in April that he wasn't returning to the hit series Scandal for its fourth season.

'At this time, I must confirm my exit from a show I've called home for three years, with what is the most talented ensemble on television today,' he said.

'I would like to first thank Shonda Rhimes for the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast.'

Short was also charged February 14 with misdemeanor spousal battery and has pleaded not guilty in that case. A judge ordered him to stay away from his wife, Tuere Short, at a March 5 court hearing.

Short's wife filed for divorce April 15, citing irreconcilable differences. She is seeking legal and physical custody of the couple's 2-year-old daughter.
