ALL THE RAGE: Who has made their mark on the red carpet?

Award season just took off. We can now satiate our love for glamour and fame with unabashed voyeurism. Glued to the idiot box, we watch the movies celebrate its stars, stories and surreptitious inner circle. The cinematic red carpet, while paying tribute to its Alisters, also honours the best names in fashion.

The red carpet is known to make or break style icons and fashionistas: last year's topper may end up being the butt of all jokes in 2014; an underdog gets the chance to shine with a glamourous debut; and those in ship shape use it as an opportunity to flaunt some sinful skin.

This honest and scathing account is a comprehensive list of desi names that have made a mark on the red carpet for better or worse, and how 2014 can be a deal-breaker for many of them in the world of fashion and style.

Kalki Koechlin

PIGGY CHOPS THE PROMOTER: This gal has all the spunk in the world, but she just can't work her wardrobe. The confidence, sex appeal and go-getter attitude is completely let down by her god-awful fashion choices. Ms. Chopra takes her rock-and-roll image a tad too far. Net result - she comes across as a fashion "lend." Even her body-hugging mini dress is better suited for a newbie and certainly not for a name that by now should be on top her game. Priyanka also fails as she shamelessly takes wardrobe inspirations from the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Niki Minaj and Beyonce.

Priyanka made the arduous but successful transition from Bollywood to Hollywood's red carpet. Her red carpet debut for 2014 was at the CAA Pre-Golden Globes and Golden Globe's after-party in LA recently. On both occasions, her feminine experiments in Bibhu Mohapatra and Burberry took a beating, thanks to her bad footwork.

'KRINGE'-WORTHY KARAN: If it wasn't for his warm personality, one wonders how anyone could get away with those scary velvet blazers, loud shirts and satin embellishments he brandishes. The outfits make cringe. Johar's attempts to compliment or match his outfits with the stars on his show only highlight the fact that there is much room for improvement when it comes to his fashion choices. At the recently-held 2014 Screen awards he threw on a black velvet blazer. Can someone please bring in the fashion police?

THE THREE FASHION MAVERICKS: Sonam Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin and Kangana Ranaut are the best clothes horses in the business, not because they are label bores but quite the opposite. These three ladies let their personal style and chic senses of fashion rule their stylist choices. Their chameleon-like prowess ensures that they are never in a style rut and rarely ever make a fashion faux-pas. Experimental, trendy and sexy, whatever they drape turns to gold.

BLUNDERING BALAN: After her Cannes disaster in 2013, it's best that she bows out from her loyalty to the sari. Sabyasachi must be thanking his lucky stars that Vidya Balan now endorses a sari brand instead of wearing him to death. The "Silk Smitha" and sensuous desi belle act has gone on for too long now, and it would be in her interest to change things in 2014. She should take a hint from Kajol who has wizened up, shed those extra pounds and opted for a makeover.

THE RANDY RANVEER SINGH: We have to hand it to the boy, he does make the effort to experiment and try new looks. Once in a while these do backfire. But, there is credibility in his choices. At the recently-held 2014 Screen awards in Mumbai, Ranveer teamed a velvet blazer with a tuxedo! Some fashion taboos must be adhered to. But, we can't wait to see what he pulls in the next few months.

Time for the Wills runway once again

Since fashion is in the spotlight, thanks to awards season, one can't wait to also see what 2014 holds in store for style aficionados on the runway. FDCI released the dates for the 23rd and 24th editions of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week for 2014. While the spring/summer 2015 WLIFW will take place from the 26th-30th of March, its autumn/winter edition is slated for 8th-12-October at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Sunil Sethi, president, FDCI, said: "We are delighted to announce the dates as we weave together a coveted list of talented designers, who will showcase their creativity." So, for those who just can't stay away both on and off the runway, here's a heads up to get in shape for model auditions or to look for the show passes.

Decoding urban men of India

Due to a series of events in 2012 and 2013, a lot of media attention has focussed on women. Men too have come under scrutiny. Now Chivas Studio presents Gentleman's Code -a weekly magazine show to be aired on Star World that breaks the code of the newage man and delves into the psyche of modern perceptions.

Journalist and author Aatish Taseer hosts these one-hour episodes to decode the urban Indian man and find out what it takes to be a man in the 21st century. It will feature guests like Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Deep Kalra, Radhakrishnan Nair, Karan Johar and Chetan Bhagat, to name a few.
