The parents of the ‘satanic killer’ Miranda Barbour have shot down her claims that she has murdered as many as 22 people saying she was a heroin addict who was highly manipulative but said she was part of a cult and had a swastika tattooed on her neck.

And in an astonishing admission her distraught father has also said the death penalty was appropriate for his teenage daughter if convicted of murder.

Meanwhile, Barbour has started giving investigators locations of graves where she has claimed her victims lay. FBI agents are standing by to take action if the details match up with any unsolved murders but so far no digs have taken place.

Barbour made global headlines after giving a sensational jailhouse interview saying she had slain scores of people, losing count at the 22 mark. It has since emerged she said her tally stood at, 'less than 100.'

The 19-year-old, who is currently behind bars awaiting trial for a 'Craigslist killing' perpetrated with her husband Eylette, said the majority of her crimes were committed in her home state of Alaska, with others coming in Texas, North Carolina and California.

But after days of speculation about the 19-year-old's claims to be one of America's most prolific serial killers her father and mother Elizabeth Dean have finally come forward to deny she could have killed so many people.

Mrs Dean did, however, admit her daughter was a member of a cult who had a Nazi swastika tattooed on to her neck.

In an interview with the same reporter who spoke with Barbour in prison and published her astonishing claims that she was part of a satanic cult responsible for dozens of murders, her father went some way to debunking much of what she said.

The father, who lives in Texas and asked for his identity to be protected, contacted the Daily Item newspaper and spoke with reporter Francis Scarcella.

He told Scarcella his daughter was a heroin addict who was highly manipulative.

He said she could not have killed people in Texas and California - as claimed in the jailhouse interview - as she was with him all the time.

But he did concede she could have been involved with one of the murders she spoke about when she claimed she was with a cult leader when he shot a man in Alaska.

The 42 year old said his daughter was a runway and would disappear from their Alaska home for days at a time.

'The incident with the gun she talked about is possible,' he said.

‘But I can promise you that she has only been to California once and Texas a few times and both times she wasn't out of  my sight.

‘The reason I think that the Alaska incident is a possibility is that Miranda ran away from home at least two times. But that I remember, both for over a 48 hour period.

'Once was around the age of 13 and once was sometime the following year, when she was 14. I don't know what took place during either of those 48-hour periods.'

The father said his daughter - who is being held on a murder charge in Sunbury, Pennsylvania - was the most manipulative person he knew.

'She is good at manipulating people,’ her father said. ‘She is the most manipulative person I have ever known.’

He also said she had been in and out of treatment centres after she became hooked on heroin.

The father said Miranda was so persuasive she was able to talk her way out of the centres.

'We couldn't stop it from happening and she was out.' he said.

The father said once Miranda became hooked on drugs they refused to let her out of the house unsupervised - meaning she could not have carried out the many murders she has claimed.

'Once all this stuff with drugs started happening we locked our house down,’ he said. ‘She wouldn’t have had the chance to do any of these things she said.’

His ex-wife Elizabeth Dean also denied her daughter could have been a serial killer.

But the 47 year old admitted Miranda had joined a cult wile living in Alaska and had a Nazi swastika tattooed on her neck.

She also denied the claim made by Miranda that the father of her two-year-old daughter was one of the victims.

Dean,47, said her daughter did not know the identity of her father and one of the reasons she moved from Alaska to North Carolina was to make a fresh start.

Dean, who lives in Cary, North Carolina, gave a brief off-camera interview to a local TV station.

She said her daughter called her last Friday to say she was going to make a ‘shocking confession’.

That confession has led to worldwide headlines with Barbour's  - with her claims of killing between 22 and 100 people unsubstantiated.

Investigators across the country have started pouring over cold-cases to see if any unsolved murders could have been carried out by Barbour – who claims to have a satanic alter-ego called 'Super Miranda.'

And an FBI source has told MailOnline the agency is liaising with police in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, where she is being held, to see if any of her confessed slayings seem legitimate.

The source said: 'Barbour has told police of multiple locations which are being vetted. Search teams have been put on standby but have not begun any digs yet. We cannot confirm how many sites have been identified by Barbour.'

In recent days Alaska has become a focal point for the teenager's outlandish claims. She left her hometown of North Pole, near Fairbanks when she was five, moving south towards Anchorage.

She stayed there until around 2011, before relocating to North Carolina – where she met her husband - and then finally settling in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.

She still has links across Alaska, including North Pole and senior police officer Lieutenant Chad Rathbun has spent the last few days ruling the teen out of the town’s two current unsolved murders.

But he has refused to dismiss her incredible claims, saying the State is so vast that it would be easy for someone to go missing without a trace.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, he said: 'From our records she (Barbour) left North Pole in about 1998, which would have made her five-years-old. She moved from here down to Wasilla and was there for some time.

'We do not have any open missing person cases or open homicide cases that we would be at all interested in, in regards to her.

'The only reason I don’t discount her claims is because we have people who come to Alaska all the time who want to disappear. Some are running from things and it is an easy state to do that in.

'Most Alaskans enjoy their privacy, being off the grid to some degree, you can easily do that out here. If you go to some of the smaller towns, there are people who don’t exist anywhere on paper other than a birth certificate from 50 years ago.

'People enjoy that kind of freedom. We have a large transient population and nobody misses them.

It's not like New York or even Anchorage. I know people who have hitchhiked up here from The States and nobody knows they're here.

'If they’re estranged from their family and they want to be left alone, this is the place for that. You could jump on a snow machine, head out 50 miles, set up a homestead and nobody would know for years.

'Back in the 70's there was a real problem with unsolved murders. Back in the pipeline days, people could be killed and taken somewhere remote and they would just go missing, but in this day and age, not as much.

'Our agency has two unsolved murders. We know who did it, but we just can't prove it at this stage.

Fairbanks has had a really good year. I think they have solved 7 of 8 homicides.

Barbour claimed she began killing at the age of 13 and most of the victims were in Florida. She also said others were killed in California and North Carolina.

Investigators in those states have doubted her claims.

All 21 murders in Wake County, North Carolina  during the time Barbour lived in the area have been solved, according to police.

Police in Raleigh said they have a few unsolved murders during that period and are following up on her statements.

Mrs Dean  refused to elaborate on what her daughter meant by her shocking confession.

But with an off camera interview with local TV station WRAL she expressed serious doubts about her daughter's claim pointing out that she was arrested within hours of the murder of Troy LaFerrara in Pennsylvania last December.

Dean said after Barbour got pregnant two years ago and did not know who the father was the family moved to North Carolina for a new start.

Her daughter met Elytte Barbour and after a short romance were married last October and moved out of state.

The couple had lived in a rented home in Coats, and Miranda worked as a supermarket cashier while her 22 year old husband was a short order cook at the local diner.

The alleged killer's father said he has nothing but sympathy for the family of his daughter's only known victim.

'Each morning, I pray for peace and comfort for you and your family. If I could trade my life for his, I can honestly say that I would do that for you.

'Twenty years in the military has taught me to be prepared to sacrifice. As a Christian, I have often struggled with the issue of capital punishment.

'However, as the reality of it settled in over the past few weeks, I believe God has brought me peace with the fact that capital punishment, if chosen by the jury, is an appropriate end in this situation.

'In that case, I would stand side by side with you, take your hand, and silently pray that some good may come of this.'
