'Who's the young Mick Hucknall?' Jay McGuiness' new curly locks distract Strictly Come Dancing viewers as they highlight resemblance with Simply Red star

While the launch show was supposed to make Strictly Come Dancing viewers giddy for the new pairings, the audience appeared to be a little distracted by Jay McGuinness' hair.

Drawing the unlikely comparison between Simply Red's frontman and the former The Wanted boyband star, Strictly fans took to Twitter in their droves to question his bouncy locks.

Singer Jay was teamed with Russian-Kazakhstani professional dancer Aliona Vilani as the series kicked off on Saturday night, though his footwork was less of an interest to some.

'Who's the young Mick hucknall?' questioned one concerned fan. While another wrote: 'The guy from The wanted could be mick Hucknalls love child.'

The fans began to ask what prompted the retro permed look as one said: 'Why on earth would someone who's not Mick Hucknall go round looking like Mick Hucknall?'

Jay is one of the five heartthrobs who made up pop band The Wanted, who decided to go their separate ways in January 2014.

Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes and Jay were formed in 2009 and enjoyed great British success, but fell just short of cracking America like their rivals One Direction.

The boyband member looked nervous on Saturday night as he made his return to the limelight with his first dance.

He confessed: ‘At the minute I’m a total bag of nerves but I’m going to take it one dance step at a time.'

The singer said in his VT before meeting his partner, though it looked like his nerves were still yet to fade when he was united with Vilani.

Looking a little bit frightened, The All Time Low hitmake told his new partner: ‘I know you’ll look after me right.’

In awe of all of the beautiful professional dancer during dance rehearsals, he said he was in a good position as he’s a single man.
