A chilling past! Nicole Kidman ripped apart by grief in disturbing new trailer for movie where she frantically searches for her missing kids in the desert

She's used to getting entangled in a full blown love story.

But Nicole Kidman stretches in a different direction in her new upcoming thriller Strangerland as she dives into the dark side when her teenage children suddenly vanish into the Australian desert. 

In the new disturbing trailer, the 47-year-old actress plays Catherine Parker, who moves to the remote town of Nathgari with her husband Matthew - played by Joseph Fiennes - and two kids.

But the stunner is left doubting her sanity when their lives are rocked after Lily and Tom - played by Maddison Brow and Nicholas Hamilton - disappear into the outback before a massive dust storm.

The town is now creepily covered in red dust and darkness as their neighbours join the search, which is lead by David Rae (Hugo Weaving), in the hope of finding the youngsters. 

But it soon becomes apparent that the cause of their disappearance is more than just natural causes as the family's eerie past seemingly comes back to haunt them.

It then cuts to a scene of Lily, prior to her disappearance, teasing the housekeeper by wearing just her bra and knickers as the gentleman says, 'Would you put some clothes on please.'

Catherine then receives a mystery phone-call from a lady, who whispers down the phone, 'Your daughter's a w***e' as the stunning mother is left stunned by the statement.

The couple soon find themselves on their own after their neighbours turn against them as lies begin to churn out and rumours spread through whispers around the town. 

As temperatures rocket and the children's chances of survival plummet with each day that passes, Catherine and Matthew are forced to go to extreme lengths in order to find their babies.

But with their stress levels rising, the loved-up duo find themselves locked in a war of words as they scream at one another through gritted teeth.

Meanwhile, Nicole opened up to the New York Post newspaper earlier this year about why she felt compelled to take on the challenging role in the thriller. 

She said: 'It was a chance to explore grief and sexuality, which … was really compelling.

'I’m at a stage in my career and my life where I just want to keep moving into places that I haven’t been,' she added.

'I've not worked with a first-time female director, I haven't worked on material like this,' Nicole said at the premiere of the film at the Sundance Film Festival, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

After a number of box office flops in recent years, critics at the famed film extravaganza in Utah had nothing but kind words to say about Nicole's performance in the film.

And there's no doubt that the actress used her own experiences as a mother-of-four in real life to help her get into character for the psychological movie. 

The flame-haired beauty has daughters Sunday Rose, six, and Faith, four, with her husband Keith Urban and grown-up adopted children Isabella and Connor with ex-spouse Tom Cruise.

Nicole has also experience intense grief recently after her father Antony Kidman tragically passed away in September last year after a fall in his  Singapore hotel room, aged 75.
