Ready for another skit Bill? Comedy star Murray sports black eye and cut head as he arrives for David Letterman show

He has made a host of legendary guest appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman over the years.

So perhaps Bill Murray was simply wearing make-up when he arrived at the show's studio looking a little beaten up on Wednesday.

He looked far from presentable for the programme's 20th birthday episode, with a blood spattered plaster on his forehead and bruising around his eye.

The 62-year-old comedian turned up for the show at the Ed Sullivan Theatre causally dressed in a blue T-shirt, bodywarmer, shorts and trainers.

But there can be no argument the thing that really caught the eye was his painful looking facial injuries.

In 1993 he appeared on the last ever episode, and popped up again to spray-paint 'DAVE!' on the host's desk on the first Late Show.

In December turning his entrance into a rendition gag, arriving on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater after being hooded and tasered, because why not?

He has appeared on the show in football gear, a smoking jacket and beret, and even on crutches while wearing an ushanka, with a sequined magenta leotard underneath a winter coat.

Back in 2007, he celebrated Letterman’s 25th year on late-night TV, by turning up in a top hat and tuxedo, uncorked a bottle of champagne, then called CBS chief Les Moonves and demanded Super Bowl tickets.

A study in contrasts: His casual ensemble was the polar opposite of the top hat and tuxedo he wore to cerebrate Dave making it 25 years on late night
