Emma Roberts parents have spoken out to defend her relationship with boyfriend Evan Peters following her arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

Actor Eric Roberts and Eliza claim the young couple 'are grown-ups' who are old enough to make their own decisions.

Their comments came as the 22-year-old took her mind off the scandal by getting into character for a new season of American Horror Story.

Mum and Dad to the rescue: Eric Roberts and wife Eliza rushed to defend their daughter after her recent arrest for beating up her boyfriend

The actress stars in the series alongside Evan, although he was not seen on set on Wednesday.

Sporting all-black ensembles Emma and her co-stars Taissa Farmiga, Jamie Brewer, Jessica Lange, and Gabourey Sidibe went gothic to film the FX TV show's third season in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Emma was arrested but released without charge following a suspected dispute with her boyfriend earlier this month. Sources claimed the arrest had been a 'misunderstanding' and that the couple had a 'passionate' relationship.

Putting her troubles aside: Emma Roberts was seen filming her upcoming season of American Horror Story in New Orleans on Wednesday

Her mother Eliza told TMZ: 'Out of love and respect we don't have anything to say.'

However, Emma's Best Of The Best actor father was quick to defend his daughter, saying: 'Here is the thing about couples, if you are not one of those people, you do not know what happens.

'You had to be one of those two people, it's their business.'

Prompting Eliza to add: 'Yeah, misunderstanding happens all the time.'

We're The Millers star Emma - who is the niece of Julia Roberts - was arrested following an argument with Evan in their hotel room in Montreal, Canada.

A little bit different: Gabourey Sidibe appeared a bit more hip hop-inspired than Gothic like her fellow castmates

Local authorities at the scene witnessed that Evan had suffered bite marks and a bloody nose.

Despite the violent encounter, friends of the couple say they will stay together.

Emma's parents although concerned for the welfare of their child, want her to work out her issues with Evan herself.

Eliza insisted: 'We just want everyone to be OK. It's up to them, the work and the communication is up to them.'

Eric added: 'They're grown-ups, well they're baby grown-ups, but they are grown-ups. You know?'

When asked how he'd feel if Emma and Evan decided to get married, the 57-year-old star said: 'We will cross that bridge when it comes.
