A student who alleged she had been raped by a fellow undergraduate is believed to have committed suicide after plunging into a deep depression.

The body of Hannah Stubbs, 22, was found at her parents’ country home six months after she was allegedly attacked.

Her grandfather Peter, a retired businessman, said the former private schoolgirl had been left deeply depressed by the assault at Keele University in Staffordshire.

He condemned the institution for providing ‘inadequate support’ for Miss Stubbs and said he was speaking out to try to protect other female students.

Mr Stubbs, 73, speaking on behalf of Hannah’s parents, Paul, 51, and Amanda, a 48-year-old nurse, said that the suspect should have been suspended while police investigated the alleged attack.

‘I am at a loss to understand why that did not happen at Keele,’ he said. ‘If it had, Hannah might have returned to her course and still be alive today.’

He also criticised Staffordshire Police for not investigating more quickly. Mr Stubbs lives in Hannah’s home village of Salt, near Stafford – just 20 miles from the university campus.

In correspondence between the grandfather and Keele – seen by the Sunday Times – he makes clear he believes the assault was ‘the sole reason for her deep depression which led to her death’.

Mr Stubbs also alleged the university ‘who have a duty of care to all students, gave inadequate support following this serious offence’.

Before going into higher education, Miss Stubbs had been a student at St Dominic’s Priory, a top Catholic school, where fees cost up to £3,400 per term. Following the alleged rape, Miss Stubbs needed medical treatment and did not return to her physiotherapy course.

Miss Stubbs’ parents, who are committed Christians, announced the death of her daughter, one of five siblings, via an emotional post on Facebook.

Mrs Stubbs wrote on Wednesday: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce that our beautiful girl Hannah died at home on Saturday evening following a long period battling depression. We wanted to give her the world, but now God has given her heaven.’

Her father-in-law declined to comment further when contacted at his large detached property in Salt yesterday.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: ‘Since we were made aware of an allegation of a rape, specially trained officers have been conducting an investigation into the incident.

‘This included referring Hannah for counselling support whilst the investigation progressed.

‘A suspect was questioned by detectives and a file was compiled for consideration by the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision.

‘A report on the circumstances of Hannah’s death will be made for Her Majesty’s Coroner.’

The force declined to reveal when it was first contacted over the alleged rape, or when the file was passed to the CPS.

A Keele University spokesman said the institution was ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of Miss Stubbs’ death.

He added: ‘The university considers the circumstances of each case, and in developing appropriate support provision, works closely with the relevant authorities and professional support agencies including medical services.’
