1985: Born Nairobi, Kenya, May 20.

2006: Represents Kenya at Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, placing 17th in the road time-trial. Wins two stages of the Tour of Mauritius.

2007: Turns professional on the road with South African squad Team Konica Minolta. Wins stage six of the Tour of Japan.

2008: Joins Barloworld and completes first Tour de France in 84th overall, placing 12th in the young riders' classification. Begins racing under the British flag.

2009: May - Rides Giro d'Italia, finishing 36th overall and seventh among the young riders.

September - One of six Britons announced as the first signings for Team Sky.

2010: October - Fifth representing England in Commonwealth Games time-trial in Delhi.

2011: August 29 - After a season disrupted by illness, places second on time-trial in Salamanca to move into Vuelta a Espana leader's red jersey.

September 11 - Finishes second overall in the Vuelta, 13 seconds behind winner Juan Jose Cobo and one place ahead of Team Sky colleague Bradley Wiggins.

September 25 - Part of British team which helps Mark Cavendish win men's road race at the World Championships in Copenhagen.

October - Finishes third at Tour of Beijing.

2012: June - Fourth in Criterium du Dauphine won by Wiggins.

July 4 - Confirmed in Britain team for London 2012 in the squad for the road race and as one of the time-trial riders.

July 7 - Wins stage seven of the Tour de France to La Planche des Belles Filles as Wiggins takes the race leader's yellow jersey.

July 22 - Wiggins wins the Tour with Froome second.

August 1 - Takes bronze in the Olympic men's time trial behind gold medal-winner Wiggins and German Tony Martin.

August 16 - Named Team Sky's leader for the Vuelta a Espana.

September 9 - After a disappointing second half of the Vuelta, finishes fourth overall, 10 minutes adrift of winner Alberto Contador.

2013: Feb 16 - Wins Tour of Oman - the first stage race win of his career.

March 12 - Finishes second to Vincenzo Nibali at the Tirreno-Adriatico, having won stage four of the race three days earlier.

March 24 - Collects another win with victory at the Criterium International.

April 28 - Strengthens position as a Tour favourite by winning the Tour de Romandie, having led the event from start to finish.

2013: April 29 - Wiggins claims he wants to go for a Giro and Tour de France double, having previously said he would support Froome in this year's Tour.

May 6 - Team Sky principal Sir David Brailsford reiterates plan for Froome to lead them at the Tour. Wiggins later withdrew through injury.

June 9 - Wins Criterium du Dauphine, his final warm-up race before the Tour, confirming his status as the favourite.

July 6 - Wins stage eight of the Tour de France in convincing fashion in Ax 3 Domaines, becoming the sixth Briton to wear the yellow jersey and opening up significant gaps in the general classification.

July 14 - Becomes the first Briton to win atop the famed Mont Ventoux, pulling away from Nairo Quintana just as the pair passed the memorial to Tom Simpson - the first Briton to ever wear the yellow jersey who died on the ascent during the 1967 Tour.

July 17 - Became only the second Briton to win more than two stages of a single Tour - behind Mark Cavendish - with victory in the individual time-trial to Chorges.

July 20 - Effectively seals victory in the Tour de France by finishing third on stage 20 from Annecy to Semnoz to take a lead of over five minutes on the final stage into Paris.

July 21 - Confirmed as Tour de France champion.

September - leads Great Britain team in the World Championships road race but none of the eight-man team, which includes Wiggins, finish the race.

2014: February - Wins stage five and the overall title at the Tour of Oman.

April - Successfully defends his Tour de Romandie title with one stage win in the time-trial.

June - Wins first two stages of the Criterium du Dauphine but struggles in the finale to finish 12th overall after conceding the lead on the penultimate stage. Is later named as Sky's leader for the Tour de France, with Wiggins omitted from the squad.

July 9 - Abandons the 2014 Tour de France after a third crash in two days.
