Here’s Ronnie! Tom Hardy films scenes as the bespectacled Kray twin on the set of Legend

By Hanna Flint

He’s been busy filming the upcoming Legends film in east London, switching between Kray twins for each scene.

But it looks like Tom Hardy was in the guise of Ronnie Kray on Sunday, as he wore the horn-rimmed glasses of the younger twin.

Tom had on a three-piece green suit and a cigar in his mouth as he stepped out of a vintage Mercedes with two flunkies while filming for the upcoming British crime drama in a posh street in central London.

The film chronicles the Krays wheelings and dealings in the Fifties and Sixties, where they achieved cult celebrity status as night-club owners, though they were really the heads of one of London’s leading organised crime outfits.

For years the brothers got away with literally murder as their power was so keenly felt that police investigations were met by the East End ‘wall of silence’ from witnesses to scared to testify against them.

Eventually though, their criminal reign over London came to an end, from the outside at least, in March 1969 after they were jailed for life for the murders of George Cornell and Jack 'The Hat' McVitie.

One murder that Ronnie was suspected of but never proven was that of his brother’s wife, Frances Shae, who is played by Emily Browning in the movie.

An inquest determined Frances’ death as suicide, just two years after she had married Reggie, but in 2002 he allegedly revealed to Bradley Allardyce, who spent three years in Maidstone Prison with him, that Ronnie killed her.

‘He suddenly broke down and said “I'm going to tell you something I've only ever told two people and something I've carried around with me” – something that had been a black hole since the day he found out,’ Allardyce, who claims to have been his lover during his prison stint.

‘He put his head on my shoulder and told me Ronnie killed Frances. He told Reggie what he had done two days after.’

Ronnie was declared insane and spent his sentence in Broadmoor Hospital until his death in 1995.

The younger twin, who was openly bisexual, was believed to have suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Written and directed by Brian Helgeland, Legend also stars Christopher Eccleston, David Thewlis, Tara Fitzgerald and Taron Egerton.
