Strictly champion Caroline Flack brands BBC hit 'the best show' as she returns to perform... despite co-hosting ITV rival The X Factor

She may be a host on ITV's re-vamped X Factor.

But it seems that Caroline Flack has pledged her allegiance to her boss Simon Cowell's fiercest rival - BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, the brunette beauty  - who picked up the Glitterball Trophy last year - has heralded the dancefloor competition the 'best show on TV', which will no doubt raise eyebrows among her colleagues.

Defending Strictly's under-fire line-up, criticised for not featuring enough household names, she told the newspaper: '[Strictly] is the best show. It was the best time of my life.

'Strictly is brilliant. It is like I’m A Celebrity, when you see the line-up you may not be impressed but as soon as the show starts you are hooked.'

It comes shortly after Cowell allowed her to return to the show for its big opening night on Saturday - despite the fact they go head-to-head in the ratings war.

The comments will surely irk the music mogul - not least because the long-running series has suffered its lowest ratings in a decade.

The 12th series' debut aired at 8pm on ITV1, last Saturday, but despite little competition from rival channels the show scored a disappointing total of 7.11million (a 35.9% share of viewers), with a further 536k (2.9%) watching on +1.

Last year, the first episode was watched by 9.03m and 465k on +1, which was an impressive total considering it was competing with Doctor Who, and one of new Time Lord Peter Capaldi's first episodes.

The 2015 X Factor launch show in comparison had little competition, being scheduled opposite the National Lottery: Five Star Family Reunion and Casualty, which achieved audience figures of 2.7 million and 4.1 million respectively.

This is despite the fact that Simon has worked hard to re-vamp the show.

He dropped long-standing judge Louis Walsh and last year's Mel B and instead poached Rita Ora from her judging spot on The Voice, as well as enlisting her pal, Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has returned to the panel alongside Cowell, while long-term host Dermot O'Leary left, and was replaced by former Xtra Factor presenters Caroline and Olly Murs.

Over on spin-off show The Xtra Factor, Rochelle Humes and Melvin Odoom, have replaced Sarah-Jane Crawford.

Caroline, pictured below at a dinner for acclaimed skincare range Rodial - which has a host of celebrity fans, has previously been frank about the show's line-up.

There she told MailOnline: 'My favourite hudge is Dannii Minogue - she's by far the best one the show has ever had because she's so committed to the contestants - even beyond her contractual obligations.

'I'd love to see her return, althought she's doing the Australian versipon, so it's tricky.'
