Her blunt blonde wig has almost become defunct, it's so instantly recognisable.

And it appears even Australian singer Sia is seeking a new a quirk, choosing to dress up her trademark look with her new favourite accessory - an oversized bow.

The 39-year-old donned the eye catching headgear, complete with a black veil, to step out at the 72nd Venice Film Festival at the weekend.

Despite her extra layer of disguise, the Chandlier singer left onlookers in no doubt of who was behind the shroud as she posed for the cameras against a lake backdrop.

The style conscious artist, whose talents extend to song writing for the likes of Rihanna, teamed the elaborate headgear with an all black ensemble for a dramatic look that had overtones of the macabre.

The fashion avant garde tucked a high-necked black shirt, with a decorative collar, into a pair of high-waisted trousers and slipped on a pair of vertiginous heels.

A white manicure finished the look at she courted press and photographers in the Italian city.

The ARIA winner has been in Italy for a few days, attending Miu Miu's Women's tales Dinner on Thursday night with her husband Erik Anders Lang.

Sia, whose real name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, is known for hits including Elastic Heart and Big Girls Cry.

She just missed out on a Moonman at last week's MTV VMA Awards where she was nominated for Best Female Video for Elastic Heart.

Earlier this year, when asked by Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage why she still shuns the spotlight and chooses to wear a wig in public, Sia's response was simple: 'Because it's ugly, it makes me feel hunted.

'You feel like prey and they're the predator and you're being hunted ... You go into fight or flight.'

Describing celebrity attention as 'unpleasant', the notoriously reluctant star said she only ever wanted a 'regular life' while doing what she loves - making music.

'It's just like wanting to have a regular life just like a regular person and still be able to make music and sing ... but without having to sacrifice just having a regular life, that's all.
