Happy birthday, Vogue! Fashion magazine to celebrate 100th anniversary with exhibition of iconic photos of models including Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer

  • National Portrait Gallery exhibition to mark Vogue landmark in February
  • Photos will celebrate famous faces and photographers who captured them
  • Features prints from Kate Moss's 'heroin chic' shoot from 1993

When British Vogue first published a picture of Kate Moss in her knickers when she was just 19 they were accused of being pornographic.

The controversial photos taken by Corinne Day of the supermodel in 1993 showed her standing against a bedroom wall wearing only underwear and a low cut pink vest top.

Now the full set of prints from the shoot are to go on display in an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from February.

Vogue 100: A Century of Style, is being held to mark the magazine's 100th anniversary and will showcase the prolific portraits they have commissioned over the last century.

The collection will also feature a later shoot of Moss taken by Mario Testino in 2008 that alludes to the Nineties controversy with the model again standing against a wall and holding up her skirt to reveal black sheer knickers.

While the collection celebrates fashion and photography over the last one hundred years, it also focuses on the famous faces like Moss who have graced its pages in artistic shoots.

Claudia Schiffer is featured astride a motorbike wearing a lacy slip in a shot taken by Herb Ritts in 1989 while recent shots reveal how the likes of Lara Stone have become the latest generation of supermodels.

Meanwhile portraits of actresses such as Gwyneth Paltrow and sports stars such as David Beckham show how the magazine haven't just featured models but those popular for cultural or sporting feats away from the catwalk.

Work by many of the leading 20th century photographers, including Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, Irving Penn and Snowdon, will be on display as well as more recent work by celebrated photographers including David Bailey and Testino.

The pictures will range from the beautiful to the bizarre such as Tim Walker's 'an awfully big adventure' collection, which shows a model decked in fur and horns riding a buffalo.

The exhibition will feature 280 prints from the Condé Nast archive and international collections to tell the story of the influential fashion magazine over the decades.

One of the images with the most historical resonance is one taken in 1941 during the blitz reflecting the wartime morale with the caption 'Fashion is Indestructible'.

Meanwhile legends of the silver screen from Fred Astaire to Marlene Dietrich are other highlights.

Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London, said: 'British Vogue has played a pivotal role in the development of photographic portraiture over the past century, commissioning leading photographers and designers to produce some of the most memorable and influential images in the history of fashion.

'We are extremely grateful to Alexandra Shulman and her team for giving us unprecedented access to the treasures of the Condé Nast archive and for allowing us to present a panoramic view of this hugely important British institution on a scale that has never been seen before.'

Alexandra Shulman, who has been Editor in Chief of British Vogue since 1992 said: 'Vogue 100: A Century of Style is a landmark exhibition in the history of magazine photography.

'I am incredibly proud of this collection of exceptional photography and of the whole concept of the exhibition, which shows the breadth and depth of the work commissioned by the magazine as well as Vogue's involvement in the creation of that work.

'The National Portrait Gallery is a wonderful place for this show, which mixes portraiture and contemporaneous artistic style in the same way as much of the Gallery's own collection.

'Anybody interested in photography, fashion, fame and magazines will find this an unmissable experience.’

The exhibition is curated by Robin Muir who is a contributing editor to British Vogue.

Vogue 100: A Century of Style will be at the National Portrait Gallery from 11 February - 22 May
