'Never judge a book by its cover': Che Chesterman stuns all FOUR judges after receiving a standing ovation at The X Factor arena auditions

As The X Factor machine continues with its quest to find someone special, it was down to Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw to whittle down its long list of hopefuls.

And it was a life-altering night for 18-year-old Che Chesterman, who received a standing ovation after nailing Jessie J's hit single Who You Are on Sunday night's episode.

The Essex native initially hoped to dazzle the judges crowds with a Sam Smith song before Simon told him to change it, seeing him soar through the first round of auditions.

'Che, the end was really surprising because at the beginning I wasn't sure,' explained 32-year-old Cheryl. 'But when you started hitting those notes, I didn't know where it came from. Those notes are ridiculous. I can't believe you can reach that register.'

'Your falsetto is out of control,' a stunned Rita told the contestant. 'I didn't know what to expect. Honestly, never judge a book by its cover.'

Fellow new judge Nick went on to agree, by saying: 'I am with Rita. It was a complete surprise. At the start, I was like, okay it's good, It got better, and then at the end it was like nothing that we have heard'.

First up it was call-centre girl Jasmin Leigh Morris, who blew the judges away with her soulful rendition of Emeli Sande's Clow to which she received a rapturous applaud from the whole audience.

Kicking things off, Radio DJ Nick confessed: 'Jasmin that was incredible. Where have you been hiding? That voice needs to be out there, we all need to hear that.'

'That voice comes out of you so effortlessly,' the former Girls Aloud star commented, while 24-year-old Rita explained: 'I joined this show to help find talent so we can find someone as authentic and as real as you.'

'It was as if you'd written that song yourself,' the X Factor boss, 55, went on to say. 'I have a feeling we're just scratching the surface with you Jasmin. From this point on, if you get through, you need to start believing in yourself.'

Up next was Max Stone, who took to the stage in an effort to prove to Simon, Cheryl, Rita and Nick that he's got what it takes to be the next big thing.

Singing Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry, the hopeful made it through to Boot Camp alongside other entries such as 27-year-old part-time student Ebru, secret shopper Sharon Rose and nursery nurse Laura Johnson.

Then it was glamorous farmer Hannah Marie Kilminster's turn, who left judges amazed with her incredible vocals.

The 30-year-old gave a powerful performance as she sang her way through to the Boot Camp stage with Somebody To Love by Queen.

A surprised Simon said:  'Where did that come from? Hannah, I am slightly speechless. I wasn't expecting that. You have an incredible voice. My God you have just shaken this competition up.'

'I was so shocked and surprised due to the whole country thing - Your voice came out and I had to hold onto my hair before it flew off,' quipped Rita, while Nick said: 'That was really, really awesome. We need a Hannah farm so we can breed singers like this.'

Cheryl told her: 'You look like a country bumpkin. You're so pretty, you have a nice aura, and you didn't need the microphone, they'd have heard you without it. You are a fantastic singer.'

Backing singer Anton Stephans, 45, who brought his dog Honey with him to his audition, also received four votes with his emotional rendition of Jennifer Hudson's track I Am Changing, despite saying he never thought he would be good enough to pursue a solo career.

'I wish you could have seen what we saw,' remarked Rita. 'Up on that stage, it was just your world and no one else's and I'm happy to be a part of it.'

'Anton, wow, that is quite the voice you have got there, vocally that was incredible,' said Nick, while Cheryl added: 'You nailed that perfroamce and they loved it as much as we did.'

'Anton, the reason why we never put an age limit on this show was so we could find people like you,' Cowell continued. 'I geninely mean that. You have the likeability factor, people like you.'

Stephans later admitted their responses were overwhelming, by saying: 'I'm used to being the person at the back, so to have comments like that is amazing. I hope I can live up to it.'
