Girl, 11, who suffered severe head injuries in Spain's worst rally disaster dies in hospital – taking the death toll to seven

A girl of 11 has died in hospital following the weekend's rally tragedy in Spain bringing the death toll to seven.

The youngster, named locally as Uxia, had been in a critical condition with severe head injuries since the Saturday's crash in the small town of Carral, in Galicia, in the north west of the country.

She died in intensive care at 10.30pm last night, local media reported.

A pregnant woman who was due to give birth today and her partner were also killed in the accident.

Two people – an adult and another child – are said to be in a 'serious' condition in hospital while five more remain in hospital. Ten others have been released from hospital following treatment.

The crash, Spain's worst rally accident, happened just before 8pm on Saturday when driver Sergio Tabeayo Sande lost control of his Peugeot 206 XS on a bend and smashed into a crowd of around 20 spectators.

Six people including a girl of 13 were killed instantly while 16 others were injured.

Funerals for the victims were due to take place today.

Ana Cayazzo and her partner Miguel Caridad, both in their 20s, died instantly when they were struck by one of the race cars as it lost control on a bend.

Miguel had recently posted photos on his Facebook page showing him tenderly touching his girlfriend's bump.

Miguel, a keen motor racing fan, is understood to have persuaded her to watch the rally a short drive from their home.

Another pregnant woman was reportedly among the dead, four of whom came from Carral, the small town of 5,000 people where the accident happened.

Carral mayor Jose Luis Fernandez Mourino said the driver was 'absolutely devastated', adding: 'What he wants to do is disappear.'

The driver and his co-pilot, named as Luis Miguel Prado Santos, were unhurt but are being counselled by experts. 

They are expected to be interviewed by investigators later this week.

Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy tweeted: 'My heartfelt condolences for those killed. I wish the injured a full and speedy recovery.'

Three of the dead were named as Marcos Prego, Sandra Maria Ares and her 13-year-old daughter Aroa.
