'With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,' the couple said in a statement.

'We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.'

Hamm, 44, and Westfeldt, a 45-year-old actress and screenwriter, were last pictured together on July 22 at a party in New York.

The pair were hit by rumours of trouble back in April, with InTouch magazine reporting that Westfeldt had ended the relationship before Hamm entered a 30-day rehab stay for alcoholism.

It's certainly been a year of change for Hamm, whose AMC series Mad Men came to a close in May after seven seasons.

He has previously admitted that playing the role of troubled Madison Avenue ad man Don Draper took its toll on his psyche.

Just weeks before he secretly checked himself into rehab in February, Hamm told Variety: 'Playing this guy does not come without its own difficulties, it's not fun to live in this guy's headspace year after year.'

He added: 'People ask, 'What's the difference between you and Don?' Look, I drink, I get drunk. I'm not immune to that.

'And (creator) Matt (Weiner) will tell you, the darkness in Don has not abated, it's gotten worse year after year. It's relentless. And it can be hard on you as a person.

'I love coming to work; I love the people I work with. But it's been rough.'

Hamm and Westfeldt began dating in 1997; they never married and have no children.

They worked together on the indie comedy Friends with Kids in 2011. Westfeldt wrote, starred and directed the movie while Hamm co-produced and also had a small role.

When asked about children of his own that same year, he told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I have a tremendous amount of respect for my friends who do balance this particular career with raising a kid, 'cause it's a tricky environment to bring them into... So not for us just yet.'
