Adam-12 and Route 66 star Martin Milner dies at age 83

One of the biggest stars of television's first few decades, Martin Milner, has died.

The actor - who starred in Route 66 in the 1960s and Adam-12 in the 1970s - died peacefully at home on Saturday.

Although boasting hundreds of on-screen credits over a six-decade acting career, Martin was best-known for playing honourable patrol officer Pete Malloy on Adam-12.

'Milner's depiction of a professional and tough yet compassionate cop led to thousands of men and women applying to become LAPD officer, including me,' Los Angeles police chief Charlie Beck told TMZ on Sunday.

Adam-12 ran from 1968 to 1975 on NBC and starred Martin as the senior officer of a two-man police team, co-starring with Kent McCord.

'I had a long, long friendship with Marty and we remained friends up till the end,' Kent told the Associated Press on Monday.

'He was one of the really true great people of our industry with a long, distinguished career.'

Martin was so popular that his character of Officer Pete Malloy crossed-over to five other shows as a guest star.

Even before the success of Adam-12, Martin was well-known for playing Tod Stiles in the 1960-1964 series, Route 66.

Following two men - Martin and co-star George Maharis - as they got into adventures while driving around the country, Route 66 was popular enough to lead to a reunion special in 1989.

The travelling nature of Route 66 allowed for big stars like Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre, as well as up-and-coming actors like Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, and Alan Alda.

Martin got his start in acting at the age of 15, when he was cast as the second of three sons in 1946's Life With Father.

He played small parts in movies throughout the 1950s and 1960s before concentrating on television after hitting it big with his shows.

The actor continued to work throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, appearing on shows like Swiss Family Robinson (as family patriarch Karl), MacGyver, Life Goes On, and Murder, She Wrote.

With a final guest-starring role on Diagnosis Murder, Martin retired from acting in 1997.

He died while surrounded by his family - wife of 64 years Judy Jones and children - at his home in Carlsbad, California.

Early career: The actor (on the ground) worked steadily in both movies and TV for the fist part of his career - appearing in the classic 1957 western, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral as a doomed man
