Island of Lefkas, Greece

We visited Kefallonia this summer and planned to spend two weeks there. That was until we hopped over to the adjacent island of Lefkas (or Lefkada)and sampled the beaches there!

The water is cleaner, the island greener and the prices lower. We couldn't believe our luck.

Lefkada seems to have a more laid-back feel too. There are plenty of young families and couples and the local people are really friendly.

The southern town of Vasiliki is the windsurfing capital of Greece and has great watersports as well as a handful of hip bars and clubs.

For beaches, the west coast is the best. Athani is a particularly pretty hilltop village and an excellent base for exploring multiple white-sand and pebble coves.

Sun worshippers will be in heaven at any of the following: Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Gialos or Milos.

My advice is give Lefkas a go before the package tourist companies get their hands on it...
