Patton has always maintained that Bender, who was bipolar and suffered from manic depression, committed suicide in their La Florida de Barú, Pérez Zeledón, home. Prosecutors plan on appealing Monday's verdict.

How do you rescue a 1,000 pound polar bear trapped in a fishing net? It sounds like the start of a strange joke, but it was no laughing matter when biologists in the Arctic actually did have to rescue a large male polar bear trapped in a fishing net. The U.S. Geological Survey rushed to the aid of a polar bear in distress when he became entangled in the net while on a remote barrier island in the Beaufort Sea off the coast of Alaska. The USGS then answered the question to the riddle by detailing on Facebook how it rescued the enormous animal.

The incident happened Tuesday night in Long Branch, New Jersey. The victims have been identified as Lyndon Beharry, 35; Amanda Morris, 29; and their sons Brandon, 7, and Brian, 4. When firefighters arrived, the victims were 'found in the same upstairs bedroom and they were struggling to survive,' said Marc LeMieux, first assistant Monmouth County prosecutor.

A father confronted a 'pervert' for taking secret photographs of his daughter as they were shopping in a Walmart store in Texas. The father was videoed angrily lambasting the alleged pervert, leaving the terrified man in a state of complete shock. It is unclear where the incident took place or whether the man was charged. Hurriedly film on a mobile phone, the angry father can be heard from a long distance away, shouting at the man.

Chef Anjula Devi (pictured), 51, from west London, believes that the secret to her amazingly youthful looks lies in her traditional Indian diet filled with herbs and spices such as turmeric, cumin and chillies. She says British 'curries' bear little resemblance to authentic Indian cooking, which is based on fresh vegetables and greens without any artificial colours. The cookery school founder said: 'The biggest sign that these spices keep you young is that I'm living proof of it - although I hate saying it!'

Co-owner Amy Bouzaglo told The Associated Press in July that she and husband Samy Bouzaglo (both seen left) were in final negotiations to sell the property and the phone number for the restaurant is disconnected. Bouzaglo said she planned to focus on making desserts for other restaurants and instructional cooking videos and that the decision had nothing to do with the negative publicity from the Fox reality show. The Bouzaglos behavior on the show was so terrible that Ramsay wished the couple good luck with their business and left, marking the first time the 48-year-old chef had ever walked off an episode. The woman was driving along the Interstate 205 in Vancouver, Washington, when Darrel Classen (pictured left) allegedly began to punch her repeatedly. Witnesses told police that they saw Classen hitting her as her car passed them on the freeway before she pulled over and ran for her life. After shielding the victim from oncoming traffic with their cars, two men detained Classen until police arrived.

Spots the alligator died at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. The 28-year-old gator had leucism, a rare genetic condition that affects the color pigmentation of animals and results in white or pale skin. Less than 15 alligators out of 5 million in the US are thought to have the condition. Spots was brought to the Audubon zoo in 1986 as a hatchling after he was recovered from a Louisiana swamp.

Paul Mason, 54, from Ipswich, Suffolk, lost 46 stone in five years after undergoing a gastric bypass in 2010. After years spent bedbound, he moved to America to be with his fiancée, Rebecca Mountain, who tracked him down online after she saw a television documentary about his extreme obesity.

Tony Mangia, who had thought the photographs had been destroyed in an attic fire at his mother's house years ago, came across the black and white prints while he was cleaning out his apartment last year. He said old memories came rushing back as he thumbed through the photographs, which 'represent the East Village I remember' during the early 1980s. During that time, Mangia was a co-publisher of The Other Paper, a paper he refers to as 'a voice of a community', in New York which lasted between 1980 and 1981. The office was located in an area 'flush with crime, heroin and urban decay' and was populated by squatters, artists, 'the leftover sixties love children' and incoming pun rockers.

The clip was captured by an amateur filmmaker and shows an unidentified flying creature commanding the sky over Boise, the capital city of the state of Ohio. In the video the huge wingspan of the bird-like creature is immediately noticeable as is the distinctively large backwards-pointing crest, which protrudes from its skull.

Top paracanoeist Charlotte Wilkinson-Burnett (pictured main) has been in a wheelchair since she slipped in the shower four years ago. She spent five months in Leicester Royal Infirmary before doctors told her to leave - or pay almost £300 a day for her care. This was because doctors said there is nothing physically wrong and her paralysis was psychological. Miss Wilkinson-Burnett claims she has no feeling from the waist down. But despite winning gold at the Canoe Sprint World Cup this summer (inset), the 23-year-old has now been told she will not be selected for the Paralympics following a decision made by British Canoeing.

Documentary photographer Doug Menuez was granted three years of unprecedented access to Steve Jobs and his team as he built a new company from the ground up after being forced to leave Apple in 1985. After photographing the famine and conflict in Eithiopia, Menuez had returned to San Francisco searching for a more hopeful story for the human race. He found it in his own backyard and between 1985 and 2000, Menuez recorded the struggles and successes of the creative minds working in the Valley, who were determined to change every aspect of our lives through technology. Lauren Williams has the longest-known legs in the US, with her eye-catching limbs measuring an incredible 49 inches from hip to heel. Sports-loving Lauren, from Houston, Texas, revealed she has always had longer legs than others her age and believes she has a strong claim for America's longest. In 2013, 5'11' Brooke Banker, a model from New York, laid claim to having the longest limbs in the Big Apple - her legs measuring 47 inches. But Lauren, 26, who stands 6'4', has a leg up on Brooke - boasting an extra two inches on her never-ending limbs.

Kaitlyn Conner, 19, from Blue Springs in Missouri, set a world record for the longest backwards limbo skating in 2008 - rolling under 23 limbo bars spread over 12 feet. Starting out at just a toddler at Watson's Rolladium SK8 Centre - the very same rink where her mother Victtoria skated as a child - Kaitlyn's passion for skating grew, and she had perfected roller limbo by the time she was four-and-a-half.
